MAY DAY RESOLUTIONS
The following resolutions were adopted at the May Day activities:
1. MUMIA ABU-JAMAL

"Mumia Abu-Jamal is a black journalist who has been framed and held in jail in the US
since 1981.
Mumia has committed his life to the struggle against racist repression in the US and
for this he has been framed over the murder of a Police Officer.

Mumia is innocent and has been sentenced to death.

The Melbourne May Day Committee, affiliates and supporters consistently supported
the struggle to free Mumia and abolish the death penalty.

Once again on May Day 2008, we demand that all of the fake charges against Mumia
Abu=Jamal be dropped, that he be released immediately and that the barbaric death
penalty be abolished in the United State and elsewhere in the world."

2. INVASION OF IRAQ
"This gathering of workers and other community sectors, demonstrating at our
traditional Victorian May Day rally and march in Melbourne Australia, determines to
redouble our efforts to defeat the invasion of Iraq.
We respond to the call from our Iraqi trade union sisters and brothers by demanding
that our Government quickly withdraws all support for the US invasion of Iraq and
pressure the US government to end its military and economic occupation of that
nation.
Five years of invasion, war and occupation have brought death, destruction, misery
and suffering to the Iraqi people and the Ba'athist legislation of 1987 which banned
trade unions in the public sector and public enterprises (which is 80% of all workers) is
still being used by the invading authorities and their current puppets in Government.
Australian workers stand together with Iraqi workers in demanding the full
implementation of workers' rights, consistent with the ILO conventions and standards
in both our countries.
Iraqi brothers and sisters we stand with you and reaffirm our public support of your
struggles in May Day 2008.

We will stand with you until you achieve your peace and freedom and until a workers'
world is established free from destruction, exploitation and anarchy created by
imperialism and particularly US imperialism.
Long live the solidarity of port workers in Iraq and the US West Coast.
Long live May Day.
Long live international solidarity."
