Award of the University Medal On the recommendation of a faculty assessment review group, the University Medal Committee may award a University Medal to a student in an undergraduate course who has shown highly distinguished merit and, where Honours are awarded, has performed at a level significantly above the minimum required for Honours Class 1. If there are specialisations within a program which involve sufficiently distinct areas of study, the Academic Board on the recommendation of the appropriate faculty may approve that a Medal be awarded for each such specialisation. The University Medal Committee will take into account the whole academic record of the student in the program. As the award of a Medal indicates outstanding academic performance, in the case of an honours degree significantly above the minimum requirements for Honours Class 1, it is expected that only in exceptional circumstances would there be more than one Medal for a particular specialisation. If the Committee is of a mind not to award a Medal which has been recommended by a faculty assessment review group it shall discuss the matter with the appropriate presiding member and head of school before making a final decision. The award of the University Medal is to be determined twice in each year by the University Medal Committee following the session 1 and session2 series of assessment review groups. The University Medal Committee shall meet at least once a year to review Medal policy in addition to determining Medal winners. Council Resolution 84/96 (a) of 12 November 1984, amended 30 October 1995.
