A supporting statement which addresses the following points must accompany this recommendation:

a) All Faculties must indicate guidelines for the award of a University Medal in the programs for
which they are the Program Authority. Guidelines need to clarify the relative weighting given to
each year of study and include the relative weighting that has been allocated to general education.

The cut off for Honours Class 1 (where applicable) and the Medal should be indicated.

b) A comparison of the student recommended for the Medal with other students in the same cohort
(but also including those who completed their degree in previous session) who received Honours
Class 1 or were considered for the Medal. Please give full details of calculations.

A recommendation for more than one Medal should demonstrate that the students’ results all
     demonstrate highly distinguished merit.

c) Data for at least the last five years on the award of Honours Class 1 (or the group considered for
the Medal) within the study area, indicating whether the Medal was awarded.

SUBJECT AWARD OF UNIVERSITY MEDALS

1. a) A University Medal Committee be established with membership as follows:

          Vice-Chancellor or nominee (Chair)
          President of the Academic Board
Deputy President of the Academic Board
          Registrar or Nominee

     b) All recommendations for the award of the University Medal be forwarded direct from the
Faculty Assessment Review Group to the University Medal Committee for approval.

     c) The University Medal Committee be the final authority for the awarding of the University
          Medal.

2. Award of the University Medal

On the recommendation of a faculty assessment review group, the University Medal Committee may
award a University Medal to a student in an undergraduate course who has shown highly distinguished
merit and, where Honours are awarded, has performed at a level significantly above the minimum
required for Honours Class 1. If there are specialisations within a program which involve sufficiently
distinct areas of study, the Academic Board on the recommendation of the appropriate faculty may
approve that a Medal be awarded for each such specialisation. The University Medal Committee will
take into account the whole academic record of the student in the program.

As the award of a Medal indicates outstanding academic performance, in the case of an honours degree
significantly above the minimum requirements for Honours Class 1, it is expected that only in
exceptional circumstances would there be more than one Medal for a particular specialisation.

If the Committee is of a mind not to award a Medal which has been recommended by a faculty
assessment review group it shall discuss the matter with the appropriate presiding member and head of
school before making a final decision.

The award of the University Medal is to be determined twice in each year by the University Medal
Committee following the session 1 and session2 series of assessment review groups.

The University Medal Committee shall meet at least once a year to review Medal policy in addition to
determining Medal winners.

Council Resolution 84/96 (a) of 12 November 1984, amended 30 October 1995.
