 Short title

       1.    This Statute may be cited as the IJniversity Sta
 Interpretation Statute 1991.

Applieation of Acts Interpretation Act

      4.   (1) To the extent that the Acts Interpretation Act
does not apply to the statutes and rules of the universitv, tha
applies, and is taken to have applied, to such statutes and rul
foree of this statute as if such Statutes and rules were rules.

 Definitions

        6. (1)         In any Statute, unless the eontrary intention                                                  ars:

 "academie staff" means sueh of the staff of the university as are, by
 Ietter of appointment, appointed by the university as academir staff
 and ineludes persons appointed by the university as professors,
 assoeiate professors, senior lecturers, leeturers, senior tutors tutors.
 frrulesil means rules made under a Statute;
 !'student" means a person (ineluding
                                       a member of staff e        by
 the University) who is:

       (a)     undertaking any course for higher education provid                                                    by the
                University, ineluding:
               (i)     any course leading to the award of a degree, iploma
                            or certificate of the University; and
               (ii)    a unit forming part of such a course; and
               (iii)   any other course not leading to the award of    degree,
                            diploma or certificate of the University; nd
       (b)     enrolled as a student of the University.
I'University Aetrr means the IJniversity of
                                            Canberca Act lggg.
     Q) For the purposes of the University Aet, persons who are
aeademic staff within the meaning of the definition of aeademe staff
in subsection (1) are regarded as members of the academic st
beeause of this Statute.

Referenee to authorities, offieers and offiees

       7.  In a Statute, unless the eontrary intention appears,
referenee to an authority, offieer or office by designatlon is,
is an authority, officer or office of that designation in or of
university, to be read as a referenee to that authority, offieer
off ice.

Citation of Statutes and rules

      8.   (1) In a Statute, rule or other instrument of the
university, a statute may be eited in any manner permitted by t h e
Statute or may be eited by its number.

      (2) In a Statute, rule or other instrument of the Unive itv,
rules made under a statute may be cited in any manner permi t e d b y
the rules.

Notification     and eommeneement of rules

      9.  (1) Where rules are made under a S t a t u t e , t h e R e g rar
must eause a notiee notifying the making of the rules to be ol ed on
a notice board in the University in a place to be determined           the
CounciI.

       Q)     The notice referred to in subseetion (1) must:
       (a)    eite the title of the rules; and
       (b)    specify the Statute under whieh, and the date on w ieh, the
               rules were made; and

       (e)    speeify the plaee at whieh a copy of the rules, be g a
               eopy certified under the Registrar's hand to be a t e eopy
               of the rules, may be inspeeted.
      (3) A notice referred to in subseetion Q) must be displ yed on
the notiee board for a period of at least 28 days immediately
following the making of the rules.

      (4) Rules made under a Statute eome into operation on the day
speeified in those rules, being a day on or after thL day on I ich a
notiee notifying the making of those rules is plaeed on a noti                                                   board
in the University in aecordance with this seetion.

Definitions   of words used in College                         Statutes

     10.(1) In any College Statute, unless the eontrary intention appears:

"Chairman     of Couneiltt means Chaneellor;

"membertt means a member of the Couneil;

"Principal'   means Vice-Chaneellor;

"Union'r means the University                 of Canberra Union.

     - Q) In any College Statute, unless the contrary intention appears,
a referenee that would, immediately before the commencement of this
statute, have been read as referenee to a provision of the cc e g e A e t
must be read as a reference to the eorresponding provision of the
University Act.

      (3) For the purposes of subseetion(1), where a term       ned in
subseetion (1) is also defined in the University Aet and the de itions
are ineonsistent, the inconsisteneyis not evidenee of a eont
intention and in the interpretation of a College Statute the   inition
in subsection (1) prevails.
