Create a Google Mail account by going to http://www.gmail.com




Enter necessary information. Sign in…DO NOT check to “Remember
me on this computer.” Never check that option on a public computer.
Be safe!

Notice the menus along the top of your page.


Click on “more” and then “even more” you will see a page full of
Google products. Let’s take a look at a few of those...
Select iGoogle




Start by selecting your interests, theme, and location. Finish by
selecting “See your page.” You should get a customized home page
with some neat features. You can customize this further by selecting
“Add stuff >>” from the upper right-hand corner.
Click on “more” and then “even more” to get back to the main Google
products page.
Select Scholar (and google books)




Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”
Select Calendar




Let’s take a look at the calendar feature. Notice the different views:
“Day,” “Week,” “Month,” “4 Days,” and “Agenda.”

Now we’ll add a few district calendars to our own calendar.

Select “Add” from the “Other calendars” box at the left of your screen.
Choose “Add a public calendar.”




Now choose the tab “Add by URL.” Copy any of the following calendar
links into the text box and choose “Add.” This will add the calendar to
your account. Repeat as necessary.
DCSD District Main Calendar: The official Board-adopted calendar for
2008-09, including non-school days, early dismissals, end of semester
and trimesters, snow days, holidays.

After adding calendars, go back to your calendars by clicking on your
email address under “My calendars” on the left side of your screen.




Notice that “DCSD District Main Ca…” has been added to my “Other
calendars.” Notice the color coding. By default, my “hempsteadtech”
account color is blue, while the “DCSD…” account is red.
Next, practice adding events to you calendar. This can be done by
simply clicking on the appropriate time.




Click on “edit event details >>” you should get a screen similar to the
one below.
When finished editing, save your even by selecting the “Save” button
at the top.

Google calendar allows you to send reminders to yourself. By default,
the only available reminders are via email and pop-up—meaning that
you must be at your computer to receive a reminder. It might be
helpful to add SMS (text) messaging as a reminder if you feel
comfortable giving your number to Google.

If you do not want to do this, skip this step and go on to the next
topic.
Add SMS ability. Go to “Settings” at the top right of the page and
then go to “Mobile Setup.” This page will allow you to enter your
phone number.




You will then have the ability to send text message to your phone from
your calendar.




Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”
Select Gmail




Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”
Select Reader




Go in to Google Reader, and select “Get started by adding
subscriptions.”
Google Reader allows you to “subscribe” to news (and other) sites and
view their content in one place. I’m going to click on “Subscribe” for
the “News” feeds.




Notice on the left side of your window, “News” has been added to my
subscriptions.
Another way you can subscribe to feeds is by clicking on “Add a
subscription” at the top of the left-hand pane. A box will appear; type
or paste an address (such as cnn.com) into the text box. This will add
said subscription.




Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”
Select Docs
Creating and sharing documents, quizzes, and spreadsheets.

Go to http://tinyurl.com/des6lj

You need to be signed in to view and edit this document. However, I
have the permissions set so that anyone with a Google account can
edit this page. Give it a try!

You do not need to be signed in to view this. Take the quiz, see the
results!

Let’s create our own shared document. From the main Docs page,
select “New” and choose “Form.”




You’ll see a screen similar to the one below.
Name your form; this will be the name of your quiz.
Create a question by adding text to the “Question Title.”

Choose the “Question Type.”




You can choose to “Make this a required question,” and then click on “Done.”

To add another question, simply click on the “+Add question” from the top of the form.




Continue this process until you are finished with the quiz. Save the quiz by selecting
“Save” at the top right of the form.

You can choose to email this document to known recipients. Simply click the link “Email
this form.” You can then choose from your contacts (or just use their emails) and send the
form to students.

For now, let’s just close out of this window and go back to the main Google Docs page.
Select the item “Owned by me.”
                                         This will take you to the documents you’ve
                                         created.

                                         Select the check mark next to the document
                                         you’ve just created.

                                         Find the “More actions” tab and select “View
                                         the published version…”




This will take you to the published form. Notice the long URL. This is the link you would
have to provide to students, if you did not email them with this information. Copy the
link.
Alternatively, you can make this into a tinyurl and share it by writing it
on the board. Let’s try that now (not the writing on the board). After
copying the said link, go to tinyurl.com (more detailed directions can
be found at the bottom of this tutorial), and paste your url.

Now I can simply share this by writing “d42hda” on the board and
telling students to go to “tinyurl.com/(look at the board)”.

Let’s move on…

Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”

Select Sites
You will have no sites created yet. Click “Create new site.”




Since this is an introduction, I have not covered all the features of
Google Sites. Let’s take a look at the basics.




At the top of your Google Sites page, you should see an editing bar.
This is fairly intuitive. From here, I’ve create a few pages, along with a
page that contains my Google Calendar. This could be used to share
important class dates with students.

I also have a link to the blog site I created (which will allow students
to post answers to questions, etc, online)--more on that in a bit.

The link you want to relay to your students will be the same as in your
window, mine is http://sites.google.com/site/hempsteadtech/
You can also find this information by selecting “Site settings,” and then
“Other stuff.”




From there, select the “Web Address” tab.




Notice the link. This will be what you want to students to have. You
could create a Tiny URL.

While we’re here, let’s look at the “Sharing,” “Appearance,” and “Other
Stuff” tabs.

The Sharing tab allows you to share the viewing of your site with
specific people. You can add them via their email address.
This would be handy if you ONLY want certain people to view your site.
In that case, uncheck the “Anyone in the world may view this site.”

The Appearance tab allows you to change Site Elements, Colors and
Fonts, and Themes. Take a look!
The Other Stuff tab allows you to change your site name and site
description, among other things.
Click on “<<Return to site” to go back to your Google Site. Create and
edit new pages. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the
environment.


Go back to the main Google products page by selecting “more” and
then “even more.”
Select Blogger
It will take you to a log in page. Log in. Create a Blog title. See below.
Create a name and address for your blog, check the availability, and
click “Continue.”

Note the address for future reference. Mine is
http://hempsteadtech.blogspot.com

Choose a template. Click continue, and then click start blogging.

Let’s take a look at some privacy Settings. Click on “Settings” and go
to the “Comments” tab.
Notice that you can choose to “Show” or “Hide” comments, and that
you can control who can make comments on your page. Comments
are responses to postings that you’ve created.


Go to the Permissions tab. This will allow you to change perms for
“Blog Authors” and “Blog Readers.”
Blog Authors. I’ve invited a number of you to co-author my blog. This
will allow you to create new posts on MY blog. Use this wisely or you
will be forever banned!
Blog Readers. You can also be selective about whom you want to
view your blog. If you only want students with accounts to view the
blog, choose this option and invite them.
Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with Blogger. Create a few
posts, etc.

Again, since this is an introduction, I have not covered all of the
features of Blogger. But if you go to my blog, you can see I have a
video posted along with comments by other users.


Tiny URL

Caution is advised when opening links from tinyurl. The reason: You
don’t know where you are going. In the screen shot below, my cursor
is hovering over the link by the first red arrow. Take a look at the
second red arrow. It does not show the real site to which is being
linked.
Below is an example of a “normal” link. My cursor is hovering over
“Party Rentals” and the link displayed at the bottom of the browser is
where we will actually be going. (Unless, of course, there is a redirect)
This is usually considered to be safer since you know where you are
going…




But for our purposes of relaying links to students, this should work just
fine; be sure to warn them of the possible dangers.

Poll Everywhere
