                                      STEEL SIDING

***** Gentek Building Products, Inc. manufactures an extensive line of vinyl,
aluminum, and steel exterior wall sidings and vinyl and aluminum soffit panels. These
low-maintenance facing systems have several advantages. They resist mildew and fading,
do not splinter, and do not require painting or refinishing.

This guide specification, SECTION 07463 - STEEL SIDING, can be used to specify the
following Gentek Brand Steel Sidings and Fascia Covers:

       SteelTek Steel Siding
       SteelSide Steel Siding
       Driftwood Steel Siding
       Universal Steel Siding
       Steel Fascia Covers

Throughout this product guide specification, references are made to other specification
sections that might be contained in the project manual. These references are presented as
examples and coordination reminders. For each project, these references will need to be
revised to reflect actual sections being used.

Within the specification text, Imperial dimensions are presented first in brackets followed
by System International Metric (SI) equivalents also in brackets. Depending on project
requirements, either the Imperial or the SI metric equivalents will need to be deleted.

This product specification will need to be edited by the specifier for a specific project and
to reflect the options and applications being used. The guide section has been written so
that most editing can be accomplished by deleting unnecessary requirements and options.
Options are indicated by [ ]. Notes to assist the specifier in selecting options and editing
the specification guide are printed in bold and indicated with *****. For final editing,
all brackets and notes will need to be deleted from the guide.

2.6000 ACCESSORIES

***** Various underlayments can be installed behind steel siding. The primary purpose
of an underlayment is to prevent air infiltration. Asphalt saturated felt is often used as
an underlayment. An aluminum reflector foil has the advantage of increasing the thermal
resistance of the wall assembly. Since the underlayment is installed on the cold side of the
exterior wall it should be perforated to prevent condensation occurring by warm air
vapor migrating through the wall and condensing on the underlayment. *****

       A. Underlayment: [No. 30 asphalt saturated felt complying with ASTM D226]
[Aluminum reflector foil] perforated to allow passage of water vapor.

       B. Fasteners: Weather and corrosion resistant nails or staples of type, size, and
spacing as recommended by siding manufacturer.

rigid insulation boards can be installed between the furring strips. Also foam insulation
backer boards can be inserted behind each steel siding panel. Edit and include the
following paragraph if thermal rigid insulation is being installed as backer for steel
siding. *****

required to form neat, finished, weathertight installation.

           1. Prior to installing siding, locate and anchor starter strips, J-channels, corner
posts, and other trim. Ensure that components are level and plumb.

           2. Outside corner posts: Cut ends to form tabs and fold 90 degrees to close post
                cavity.

C.0 Siding panels: Install [horizontally] [vertically] with panels aligned, level, and
           plumb.

           1. Engage first panel in starter strip and ensure it is securely locked before
fastening. Overlap, engage, and lock subsequent panels over preceding ones.

***** Metal siding expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Panel ends must be
overlapped to avoid gaps during contraction. ******

           2. Overlapping: Overlap panels [3/8 inch] [10 mm] minimum and [5/8 inch] [16
mm] maximum. Face overlap joints away from entrances. Lap factory cut
ends on top of field cut ends.

***** Where steel components meet or terminate against other materials, allowance must
be made for expansion and contraction to avoid waves and buckles due to temperature
changes. *****

           3. Expansion joints: Where steel components butt or adjoin other materials,
                leave expansion gap:

                a. Hot weather with steel components partially expanded: [1/16 inch] [2
                     mm].

                b. Cold weather steel components partially contracted: [1/8 inch] [3 mm].

***** For visual appearance, placement of overlap joints should be well-planned. Poor
arrangement of joints detracts from appearance of installed siding. *****

4.0 Stagger panel overlap joints as follows:

                a. Separate joint in one course [24 inches] [610 mm] minimum from joint in
                     adjacent course.

                b. Joints in line vertically shall be separated by two courses minimum.

                c. Avoid joints directly above or below window, door, and other openings.

D.00 Fastening: Install siding panels and trim to move freely from side to side.

           1. Drive fasteners straight and level. Do not slant fasteners.

***** Elongated slots in siding are provided to allow siding to contract and expand
freely. Hence fasteners should be placed in center of slot and not tight enough to restrict
movement. *****

           2. Place fasteners in center of attachment slots.

           3. Do not drive head of fastener tightly against siding hem. Allow [1/32 inch] [1
mm] clearance between fastener head and siding panel.

           4. Do not place fastener through facing of siding panel.

           5. Spacing: [16 inches] [406 mm] average with [24 inches] [610 mm] maximum.
Do not place fastener closer than [6 inches] [152 mm] to panel overlap joints.

***** Backer tabs may be used with [8 inches] [203 mm] wide siding panels to ensure
rigidity, evenness, and tight end laps. *****

E.0 Backer tabs: Install at all panel overlap joints and panels entering corners, Secure
           by nailing.

***** Include the following paragraph if thermal insulation backer boards are to be
installed behind siding panels. *****

       F. Insulation: Drop in insulation backer behind siding panel after it is engaged in
interlock. Ensure nails are length sufficient to penetrate insulation. Provide
furring at starter strips and around openings as required to accommodate insulation
          thickness.

***** Include the following paragraph if corner caps are to be installed in lieu of corner
posts. *****

       G. Corner caps: Completely install siding on one wall. Install one course on adjacent
wall. Ensure courses align. Install corner cap by slipping flanges of cap up under
butt of each panel. Tap with rubber mallet to engage. Secure cap with nails.
Proceed by installing next course and cap.

***** Include the following paragraph if steel fascia panels are being installed. *****

       H. Fascia panels:

           1. Attach bottom flange to support member with nails.

           2. At corners, bend [1 inch] [25 mm] flange of first fascia panel 90 degrees
