LAKE COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION Mission Statement: The Lake County Coroner’s Office is dedicated to providing the citizens of Lake County with timely Medicolegal Death Investigations in a professional and courteous manner, while ensuring the highest level of compassion, dignity, and respect for the deceased and their family. Through collaborative efforts and advances in technology and training, our efforts will serve those who can no longer serve themselves. We will also care for the living by providing historical data, identifying trends, and offering recommendations to help prevent deaths of similar circumstance. General Information: The Lake County Coroner’s Office offers unpaid internships during the fall, winter/spring, and summer semesters. The internship program is designed to provide recent high school graduates and college students with an opportunity to learn about the Medicolegal Death Investigation field and the supporting areas of the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Interns will be provided with an opportunity to assist in investigating cases reported to the Coroner, visit scenes, assist in transporting the deceased, assist in obtaining toxicology samples, assist with x-rays, examinations, preparing forms, and viewing postmortem examinations. Interns will also be provided an opportunity to assist the Toxicology Analyst in our laboratory. Interns are expected to work between 20 and 40 hours a week during an 8 to 12 week internship period. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the intern’s College or University. All interns are subject to applicable Lake County Coroner’s Office policies. Eligibility: Candidates must be 18 years old, a graduate of a high school at the time of the internship period, and will be/or is attending an accredited college or university. College graduates must start the internship program within 6 months of graduation. Candidates must complete an application form and submit it to the Lake County Coroner’s Office for consideration. Only one candidate will be considered per semester, to maximize the intern’s experience.
