The Position:                                  VISITOR SERVICES VOLUNTEER

Reports to:                                    Visitor Services Manager

Division, Work Unit:                           Development & Communications

Location:                                      7 Templestowe Road, Bulleen, Victoria, 3105

Start Date:                                    April 2010

1.   Statement of
                            Heide aims to offer an inspiring, educational and thought-provoking experience of modern and contemporary art,
     Purpose
                            architecture and landscape.


2.   Volunteer Policy
                            Heide Museum of Modern Art values working with volunteers and they play a vital role in the life of the Museum.
                            Volunteers actively involve the community in the mission and activities of the Museum. They bring vitality,
                            interests, experience and skills to supporting the work of the staff, and they assist the Museum in maintaining its
                            high standards of customer service.

                            In turn, volunteers learn new skills, share their knowledge and experience, take up new opportunities and
                            develop new networks.


3.   Primary focus of the
                            The Museum’s Visitor Services Volunteer Program aims to provide participants with a broad general
     position:
                            understanding of Museum operations, focusing principally upon front-of-house activities.

                            Under direction from the Visitor Services Management team, assist in the Museum’s daily frontline operations
                            including safety, security and customer service, and provide information relating to exhibitions, admissions, retail
                            and memberships.

                            Heide is currently seeking 15 enthusiastic new Visitor Services Volunteers to join its existing team.


4.   Duties:                In fulfilling the primary focus of the position the candidate duties will typically encompass the following key
                            responsibilities:


                            1.   Customer Service
                                      Provide a courteous, comprehensive and efficient information service to visitors covering:
                                                Current exhibitions and events
                                                Heide’s history, gardens and architecture
                                                Public and education program scheduling
                                                Heide Store
                                                Heide Café and Event Hire
                                                Emergency information

                                      Presentation of Heide’s facilities:
                                             Assist in the presentation of the Museum’s public spaces to the highest standards

                                      Relationship management
                                               Conduct entry/exit market research as required
                                               Assist with mailings as required

                            2.   Security and Safety
                                     Maintain vigilance and enforce regulations governing the protection and security of:
                                               works of art
                                               visitors and staff

                                      In the event of an emergency assist with the Museum’s emergency response procedures.
                                                                                                     POSITION DESCRIPTION

                         3.   Heide Membership
                                   Provide friendly, comprehensive and efficient information services to new and existing Heide Members
                                   Assist with Heide Membership market research as required
                                   Assist with Heide Membership mailings as required

                         4.   Retail
                                   Assist with the operation of the Heide Store. This includes:
                                             Maintaining an active knowledge of stock
                                             Labelling and pricing merchandise in accordance with set standards
                                             Assist with annual stocktake

                         5. Events
                                 Assist with Museum events during and outside normal business hours


6.   Key Selection       To achieve the purpose of the position, the following attributes are required:
     Criteria:
                                  Demonstrated well developed interpersonal and communication skills

                                  Ability to work with minimum supervision and in a team environment

                                  Experience in museum/gallery/retail or customer service environment

                                  Experience with basic computer operations

                                  An appreciation for cultural diversity and an ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds


7.   Other relevant
                                  A minimum commitment of one half-day shift per fortnight is required. Shifts are available 10am –
     information
                                   1.30pm or 1.30 – 5pm Tuesday to Sunday. Priority will be given to those available to work regularly on
                                   weekends.

                                  Following the completion of training, the successful applicant will be subject to a three month
                                   probationary period

                                  Training will be provided via induction, on the job and in ongoing seminars

                                  The successful applicant will be required to undergo a National Police Record check at the expense of
                                   the Museum
