Bargain Hunters ACTIVITY OVERVIEW In this activity students will go on a class trip to a local second hand clothing shop where they will purchase clothing for a themed fashion show using real NZ currency. Students will form groups, assign roles and purchase second hand clothing items according to success criteria. The purpose of the activity is for students to apply a range of enterprising attributes to an activity and reflect on their success in using them. In completing this activity, students should understand how important it is to allocate jobs to personal strengths in order to successfully work together and complete a task. They will learn how important it is to plan and stick to a budget. NB: An alternative to visiting a second hand shop could be to “hire” clothing items collected from around the school, i.e. from school dress up boxes, donated clothing or personal items. Monopoly money, class currency or maths money could be another alternative to real currency. Sensitivity to your community’s economic situation R may need to be considered when choosing this lesson. 1. SUGGESTED TEACHING AND LEARNING SEQUENCE The teacher explains that the students are to holding a fashion show at school where each group will have the chance to purchase clothing from a second hand shop. (The theme of the fashion show would depend on what was available at the time. Themes could include: colours – eg: pastels; years – eg: 1970’s; patterns – eg: stripes; areas – eg: tropical, etc.) 2. Students are grouped into teams of 4-5 members. 3. The teacher discusses with the class how they will get their money to purchase the clothing items. (Either each child contributes $2 personally from doing jobs at home, or the class raises the money at school). 4. Job cards are handed out and students match these to their personal strengths/goals, ie: CEO, accountant, model, fashion designer, resource manager, compere, photographer, etc. 5. The teacher asks the students to brainstorm a range of success citeria for their fashion item. Suggested criteria could include: outfit follows the theme, clothing well coordinated, outfit well promoted by group compere, group using job cards to work well as a team, etc. 6. The class plans and visits the opportunity shop/s. Groups select, try on and then purchase the necessary items needed for their outfit. 7. Groups work on their role for the final fashion show. 8. The Fashion Show is held. Invite other classes, staff, parents, etc. 9. Each group will model their outfit along the catwalk. Music can be played, a compere can help promote the design to explain finer details of the design. 10. A guest judge could award prizes for different categories – ie: most creative, overall best dressed, best catwalk, best compere, best group work, etc. 11. The teacher shows the students the list of enterprising attributes required for this lesson (see below) and students name a stage in the lesson when they used (or could have used) each one. Groups rank their application of these enterprising attributes using a continuum and identify areas for improvement. Reflective questions/discussion 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. LEARNING OUTCOME/S Students will be able to:  Apply a range of enterprising attributes as they participate in a team to purchase clothing on a certain theme for a fashion show.  Work within a team allocating roles so that they can achieve the desired outcome. Which enterprising attributes did we use well? Give examples. Which enterprising attributes do we need to work on? What could we do to make improvements in these areas? Which team worked well together? What did they do to make their group work a success? If we had to do this challenge all over again, what would we do differently? VOCABULARY FOR THE LANGUAGE WHEEL Budget Cooperation ideas Criteria Opportunity Planning Roles Collecting Creative Design Organising Resources Team work Key competencies and enterprising attributes to consider: Thinking Generating, identifying and assessing opportunities Generating and using creative ideas and processes Managing Self Matching personal goals and capabilities to an undertaking Relating to Others Working with others and teams Being fair and responsible Participating and Contributing Identifying, recruiting and managing resources  Reflect on their use of enterprising attributes by giving examples of their own enterprising behaviour and identifying areas for improvement.
