Internet Job Search: A List of National & Specialty Career Web Sites
Introduction
Welcome! For those who have been passing around Internet Job Search, Vol. 1: National & Specialty Web Sites — thanks! You're doing a great job of sharing. If you are new to this document, I’m glad you found us. If you have been here before, you might notice that there is a subtle name change. There are no longer two volumes, just the newest version, Internet Job Search: A List of National & Specialty Career Web Sites, also called IJS, which is so much easier to write out. This document was created to provide resources to anyone using the Internet to find jobs, locate career information, explore schools or training, or apply for jobs. No website is endorsed or recommended. The author takes no responsibility for the operation or content of the websites listed in this document, nor are the websites presented here a complete list of all the job search and career information available on the Internet. With that said, let's go!
FYI
TOP
More than 75 websites have been added since the August 2001 version. Actually, I lost count … so that’s just a guess, but sounds productive. All I know is I still have over 200 more in my Check It Out folder. Since September 2002, each website has been personally checked — one by one by one. Websites that are no longer valid or useful have been removed. About 40% had some type of change — either in the wording, updating the link, or deleting a broken or inappropriate link. You may use, reproduce and distribute copies of this document for non-profit purposes only — just be sure the entire document is reproduced and the contents aren't changed (HTML version doesn’t show the page headers or footers, but the same applies to the online version, too). All requests for copying and distribution, including electronic distribution, should be directed to the author. The primary mission of this document is to create a readable, usable, current and informative list of Internet websites that would benefit anyone looking for work or researching other career information. The secondary goal is to share this document with anyone looking for work and with the workforce professionals serving job seekers.
Need some training before you start?

If you are familiar with computers, handle the mouse like a pro, and can move around the Internet with ease, this part probably isn’t for you. Many of you, though, are new to PCs, the Internet and using a mouse. I have learned from experience that starting basic Internet instruction by saying “double-click on the Internet Explorer browser icon” can be loaded with unknowns. Double-click? Browser? Icon? Double-click with what? What may seem basic to some can be incredibly confusing and frustrating to others. Fortunately there is help! Many good people have given a lot of their valuable time to create (and post on the Internet) basic,

and not-so-basic, tutorials for whatever your needs happen to be. If you need to practice using a mouse (that cute thing with a tail sitting beside your computer) go to Mouserobics! and have some fun while you learn (http://www.ckls.org/~crippel/computerlab/tutorials/mouse/page1.html). Provided by the University of Idaho Library, there is a great list of free Web Training Resources (http://www.lib.uidaho.edu/library/guides/webtrn.html) you will enjoy using. There is enough variety in the list to keep you busy for a while. Don’t be too worried if some of the links don’t work or some take you to updated locations — that’s just your first lesson about using the Internet. There are, for sure, many other resources out there on the World Wide Web; we but only have to search for them. Oh, and don’t forget when you’re on the Internet to explore and have fun!
How to move around the document
TOP
If you’re using any of the electronic versions (online, PDF, DOC), there are hyperlinks within each document that will quickly move you (and your blinking mouse cursor) from one location in the document to another. From the Table of Contents, use the mouse to left-click on any topic or page number (each are shown in blue) to move your mouse cursor to that topic in the document. To move back to the Table of Contents, click on TOP and your mouse cursor will move to that topic’s location in the Table of Contents. In Word select View, Document Map and an outline of this document, complete with active links, will appear on the left side of the screen. Using the mouse, point to and left-click on any topic and your cursor will move to the beginning of that topic in the document. Use the + and – signs to expand and contract the listings under each topic in the Document Map. Select View, Document Map to return to your previous view of this document. In the Acrobat Reader (PDF) version there is a frame on the left that works in the same way as Word’s Document Map. Choose, point, click, go.
But wait! There’s more!

What you are reading is one of three documents written by the author: Internet Job Search: A List of National & Specialty Career Web Sites (known as IJS), A Quick Guide to Internet Job Search & Career Web Sites (Quick Guide), and The Dos and Don'ts of Using the Internet in Your Job Search (Dos and Don’ts). IJS was created to serve those who want to explore as many sites as possible. You don’t want the author deciding which sites are useful for you, which are best for you, or which to include in your job search — although the author does include personal comments about some of the listings. I have one — and only one — listing labeled with 5 stars. Find it, work your way through every entry in the Index, and you will be doing one of the best things you can for your career. IJS lists websites that are free to use and have up-to-date job search or career information. You decide a site’s usefulness for your own needs. A few sites do require money — it will say “Costs $$$” — but there aren’t many. The majority of those sites also include information you can explore at no cost.

Internet Job Search: A List of National & Specialty Career Web Sites
There are Top 10 and Top 100 lists of popular career sites that list tens of thousands of jobs in their databases (worldHOT.com lists the top career sites, ranked by traffic). The resources on these lists are useful sites and you will definitely want to explore them. But there are many databases with far fewer jobs posted — a few thousand, a few hundred, even just a few dozen — that can help with your job search, too. All it takes is one solid lead to find the job you want. The second document was created to provide a one-page handout for job seekers who ask "Where do I start?" A Quick Guide to Internet Job Search & Career Web Sites gets job seekers pointed in the right direction. Quick Guide lists a little bit of this, a little bit of that. It is a small mix of websites — just enough to start you on your way, but not so many you are overwhelmed by all the possibilities. Quick Guide was also created to be copied and distributed through career resource rooms, libraries, job search groups and networking groups. The Dos and Don'ts of Using the Internet in Your Job Search is the third document. Many job seekers are conducting today’s job searches using older, pre-Internet information. With five years of experience working with customers using the Internet in their job searches, certain topics come up over and over again. Dos and Don’ts offers suggestions, ideas and solutions to common problems that might arise when using the Internet and e-mail in your job search. All three documents have active links to resources and are available at www.cvworkforce.org/internet.htm.
Some final words.

We hear quite a bit about job searching on the Internet these days. You might think it is the only place to do a job search. Absolutely not! Using the Internet is a very passive job search. Once you have searched and e-mailed, once you have posted your resume and set up e-mail notification accounts, there's not much to do until a prospective employer or recruiter contacts you. Rarely do you know if anyone has seen your resume, much less read it. There is nothing you can follow up on, no one to contact. Keep in mind, though, that the Internet is one more tool to use in your job search, not the only one. Next, I encourage you to take charge of your job search! It is your job search — not the fax machine's or Postal Service's or the Internet's or your local newspaper's job search. Follow up on all contacts you make and everywhere you send your resume, if at all possible. I'm always surprised when a customer says, "I can do that?" Well, yes, you can — and you should. Just remember that there is a fine line between taking care of yourself and being a pest! Finally — network, network, network. Talk to anyone and everyone possible. Let them know you are looking for work and what you are looking for. Networking — using personal contacts — is still where the majority of the job offers originate. Ideally you want your first contact with a prospective employer to be a personal one — usually by phone. If asked for a resume, you can then direct it to a specific person who truly wants to read it. Be sure to let friends, relatives, former coworkers and supervisors, neighbors, and people you meet at various groups know that you are in the job market, what you are looking for, and how to contact you. Hint: Create a business card that lists your name, contact information and a powerful, concise, focused statement about yourself and the type of work you are seeking. Hand the card out whenever it seems right. It is just different enough to be noticed.

Be sure the people who agreed to be your references each have a copy of your resume. Touch bases with your references every month or so; check to see if they are being contacted by employers, and let them know how you are doing with your job search. Let each of them know when you start working again. Send a thank you when you are done. If you know someone (or two or three) in your industry that has experience reviewing resumes or interviewing candidates for openings in your line of work, ask if they will review your resume and offer suggestions. Whatever your individual needs and however you use this document, the author has this request: Enjoy, have fun, explore, and share. Thanks.

Work At Home, Self-Employed, Telecommuting, Entrepreneurs, Contractors & Freelancers
Many people ask how they can find a job working from home. This is an area where the author had difficulty locating valid, useful websites (not that the author vouches for the validity or usefulness of any of the sites listed here). So many of the sites located during searches (too many!) promised untold riches for little effort or by enrolling every friend, relative and stranger you can find. Those sites are not listed here. So many websites (too many!) require up-front money before you can check them out, and they, too, are not listed unless another source said the site was legitimate and useful. I was frustrated with many of the work-at-home sites. Many required far too many clicks just to find out whether or not there was a “membership fee” or book or program to buy or some other type of fee. Many had so many “pop-up ads” — when you moved forward and back — that I was not a happy surfer. These sites went on my “I don’t trust ‘em” list. I also kept bumping into some of the same sites over and over again, but linked together under several different names. Again, if you have to hide, why, why, why should we trust you? The work-at-home industry is loaded with scams and information of questionable value — so approach cautiously, with lots of skepticism, with your eyes wide open. Conduct your own thorough research, check out various resources that detail many of the work-at-home scams, talk with people actually doing what you want to do, and read up on the topic. It will be well worth your time — and save you money and frustration. For anyone who wants to be self-employed or use his or her home to conduct business, here are a few links to get you started. Again, research any opportunities yourself before making a commitment.

None are recommended or special, just those found during searches for job sites. If a website has an "About Us" section or similar link, it would be well worth your time to read it.

Resume Assistance
Your Resume
TOP
Your resume is a sales tool and you are the product being sold. Your resume is frequently the first contact you will have with a company that might one day be your employer. How your resume is presented — both its content and its appearance — is a reflection of your content and appearance. Be sure the messages and impressions conveyed in your resume are the ones you want to give. Resumes are no longer read and reviewed exclusively by human beings. Today your resume is just as likely to be scanned by a machine and the information is stored in a computer database before anyone looks at it. After a process called a keyword search, your resume might be selected for closer inspection — or not. How your resume is created — what words you select and how it looks — affects how many keyword “hits” it will receive. Because of advances in technology — computers and the Internet being two of them — you now need more than one resume format.
A Formatted Resume
TOP
This type of resume is created in a format that will be read by a human being. It is visually appealing and contains standard word processing formatting such as boldface, centering, indenting, word wrapping, italics, tabs, and bullets. In a Formatted Resume the words are arranged in a style that allows the reader to quickly and easily determine whether or not the company has the type of work you looking for and whether or not you have the skills, accomplishments, experience, background and personal traits to support that goal (your summary). When reviewing your resume, be sure your resume is: Error free. Be sure there are no misspellings, no typos, no misuse of words, that grammar is used correctly and each word is used correctly. Make sure each comma and semicolon is followed by a space. Relevant to the job to which you are applying. Too often job seekers send one resume to a variety of jobs instead of directing it to a specific job. Look at your resume and ask yourself if it relates to the job you are considering and addresses the requirements of the job and the needs of the employer. Clean. No spots, blotches or lines from making copies, no coffee spills or finger smudges, no crossing out of text and manually writing in the correct information. Consistent. Each separate type of entry (dates, titles, body text, bullets, indents, tabs, font style and size, margins) should look the same throughout the resume. Look at each entry individually. Are the dates of employment the same style and in the same position everywhere? Do any bullets start at the same location everywhere? Are all headings the same font, size and style throughout the resume? Are the left and right margins the same? Easy and quick to read and looks appealing. Words in all capital letters are used just for emphasis, not throughout the resume. The size of the characters should be large enough to read easily (12 point). The margins should be wide enough to avoid crowding of the words on the page and leave enough space for

any reader to make notes. It is okay to have a 2-page resume if you have more than five years of relevant work experience. Don’t squeeze everything into one page at the expense of readability. Read by someone else. Ask someone who is knowledgeable to read your resume and look for errors. You shouldn’t proofread your own work because you will see what you expect to see, not what is necessarily there. If you know someone in your field who has experience reviewing resumes, ask for any suggestions. One warning, though; every person who reads your resume will offer different — and sometimes conflicting — suggestions about what should be in or left out of your resume. Everyone is correct because there are no rules, just lots of opinions. Do pay attention when they find errors. Truthful. There is nothing you can “fudge” that hasn’t been seen before by HR — and recognized for what it is. Trust me. Forget about adjusting your dates of employment. Forget about inflating your education. Forget about listing awards and accomplishments that are not yours. Forget about implying active participation in volunteer work or membership in an organization that hasn’t seen you or your dues in quite a while. Saying you’re a “former member” will work if it is relevant and fairly recent. Created on a computer and the software is used properly. Let the power and automation of the computer assist you with creating a visually attractive and easy-to-read document. Press Enter only at the end of each complete thought; let the Word Wrap and Indent features roll text automatically from one line to the next as needed. Use the formatting features to highlight information and to make certain text stand out. Use appropriate upper and lower case characters — do not type the entire resume in all capital letters! Save your Formatted Resume and give it a descriptive file name such as “Formatted Resume of Your Name”. Think about how many e-mails are sent every day with file attachments named “Resume”.
ASCII Text & Scannable Resumes
TOP
This type of resume is intended to be read accurately by a machine and the information found during a computer search for certain words and phrases. The content will be read by a scanner, not a person, and must contain key words and phrases that will be found during a database search. The point to be made here is that machines read literally. Unlike human reviewers, computers can’t scan or read “between the lines”. A fold line on a piece of paper would barely be noticed by a human reviewer; to a scanner it could make entire lines of text unreadable. Approach your resume as though it might be scanned when it arrives at its destination by fax, phone, mail or person. Some companies scan incoming resumes and place the information directly into a resume database. Sometimes the scanning assists in sorting the incoming resumes into categories for easy retrieval. If you post an online resume at a job board or copy and paste your resume directly into a company’s online database, it is a given that a keyword search will determine whether or not your information will be found and read. When computers, not people, are involved in reviewing your qualifications for a specific job, key words and phrases are programmed into the computer and the computer quickly and effortlessly searches the resume database for those words and phrases. The resumes with the most keyword “hits” are retrieved and reviewed. The owners of the resumes with the most hits stand a good chance of being contacted by the company for an interview. In the past job seekers were taught that a resume should be a brief overview of their work history and qualifications — enough to highlight key points and get them an interview. Not true any more. That lack of detail can limit opportunities to be located in a database search.

What are your keywords? Each industry, each type of job, has different requirements. Read enough ads and job postings for the type of work that interests you and you will notice that certain words and phrases appear over and over again. These are your keywords. Also, be sure to include in your resume any requirements and preferences listed in an ad or job posting — if you have them. The appearance of the characters you use (the font type and size), your choice of words, and how the words are arranged on the page are very important when creating a resume that can be scanned or copied and pasted into online databases. The safest method is to save your formatted resume in an ASCII text, or text only, format. To create your resume in a text format, open your Formatted Resume in your word processor and save it in a text format. In Microsoft Word you would select F12 (File, Save As). Under Save As Type select Text Only or Plain Text. Select File Name and rename the document something such as “Internet Resume of Your Name”. Select Save. The new document name ends with a .txt file name extension. You now have two resumes, each in different formats. Don’t forget — if you update one version you need to update the other. You must close the text document and then open it before you can see the changes. In Microsoft Word you would select Ctrl+F4 (Close Window). Then immediately select Alt+F (File), then type the number 1 (for the first document listed under your recently used file list). Your resume will appear on the screen in text format — needing just a little bit more editing. Your text resume maintains the word wrap feature used in your formatted resume, but all formatting has been removed — no text in bold, underline or italics, and any bullets have been converted, usually, to an asterisk (*). The font is 10 pt. Courier or Courier New. Each line of text in a scannable resume should begin at the left margin (no centered, tabbed or indented text). You can also use one long paragraph instead of several bulleted statements. Each new thought (name, address, phone number, title, dates, company name, etc.) should start on a new line. Fine tune the resume by editing as needed. Remember, only a machine will be reading the resume. Open this file in your word processor or in Notepad. In Notepad, select Edit, Word Wrap to maintain that feature. Read the articles mentioned on page 81 for assistance with creating your formatted and text resumes and other correspondence. Resume Tips & Hints
TOP
Once you have a good resume you will want to review it for accuracy and completeness. Here are some questions that will help you finalize your resume. Look at your completed resume and ask these questions. Is your contact information current and accurate? Surprisingly, a large number of people who type their own resumes fail to include a phone number on the resume; they simply forget. If you don't have a phone, ask someone with voice mail or an answering machine to take messages for you. Carefully proofread your contact information. Too many resumes have a typo somewhere in the phone number. Also, if you are unemployed your circumstances may change. Will the listed phone, cell, or beeper numbers and any e-mail address be valid in 4 months, 6 months, or longer? Does your resume reflect no more than 10 to 15 years of employment? Don’t list your entire work history; save any additional information for the interview. You want to focus on current skills, current business experience, and current technology.

Does your resume document any promotions? Promotions at a company show many things, including a willingness to learn and to acquire new skills, a progression in professional successes, and the ability to handle change. Do you focus on your accomplishments and any recognition? Too many resumes list just the duties of each position. If you do this, your resume will read just like the other applicants doing the same job and who also lists duties. What sets you apart from other people doing the same job? What are you offering an employer that is different from someone doing the same type of work? What tangible results can you document? For example, a resume that reads “PC skills include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access” says one thing. A resume that reads “Highly skilled producing lengthy training documents in MS Word, four years designing and creating detailed Excel spreadsheets and Access databases, and extensive experience creating professional PowerPoint presentations for sales staff” says something completely different. Does your resume reflect what you want or what you have to offer? Your needs are not important to an employer. Think about this when you write your resume, complete online applications, and post your resume online. The employer’s needs are primary. Always write your resume with the employer in mind and focus on what you can bring to the company and the position. Have you eliminated all personal information, unless relevant? Never list your age, the status of your health, your Social Security Number, hobbies and interests, marital status and any children. If you apply to be a Church Choir Organist, or an Outward Bound Instructor, activities relating to these areas would be relevant. Otherwise, eliminate any personal information. Are you posting your resume anywhere on the Internet? Assume you will be found through a keyword search, not because someone read your resume. If posting an online resume at an Internet job board (Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs, Dice, and more), or if applying for a job online through an employer’s website, your resume will be found through a keyword search. Read the job description carefully and thoroughly. The requirements, job description and desired items will more than likely be some of the keywords used in the search for viable candidates. Will your posting be found? Did you spell check your online resume or application? Most job boards and employer websites do not have a spell check feature, but there is sometimes a way around this. If you can preview the online version, you can spell check another way. Select and copy the resume preview, open your word processor to a new document, and paste in the resume. Perform a spell check and note any errors. Then you can correct any errors in the online version. Did you create your resume using a packaged resume program or Microsoft Works? If you use Microsoft Works (WPS) or a resume software package (RES and RPR are two examples of the files created in these programs), do not attach your resume file to e-mail. Works is software that comes with many home PCs, and files saved in a Works format are difficult to open from other software. So are files saved in a resume creator format. Most software programs allow files to be saved in a Rich Text Format (RTF). Any word processor will be able to open a document saved as an RTF file. Convert your file(s) to this format before attaching to e-mail. When did you last update your virus checking software? Too many home PCs have antivirus software that hasn’t been updated since the computer was purchased. Some resumes created on home PCs contain viruses that aren’t being detected because the antivirus software is not current. Protect your PC and your resume. Load a current virus checker onto your PC today and download updates as needed. There is quite a bit of help on the Internet. Below are several websites that offer great information about
