       GROUNDS MAINTENANCE AND TRAILS
                 SPECIALIST
Applications are being accepted for a Grounds Maintenance and Trails Specialist
to work with the Parks and Recreation Department. Candidate will perform
responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of landscaping and grounds
assignments with an emphasis on trail development and associated trail
activities. Typical tasks include: development and maintenance of park trails;
assistance with trail related activities; landscaping and grounds maintenance of
county facilities; performing a variety of building trades tasks; operating,
maintaining and repairing equipment.

Candidate should have a general knowledge of the use of common hand and
specialized power tools, the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance
of equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance. Candidate should
have a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from
high school and some experience as a semi-skilled worker in grounds
maintenance; trail development and association with trail related activities a
plus. Special requirements: Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in
the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of, or ability to acquire a pesticide
applicator’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of landscaping and grounds assignments with an emphasis
on trail development and associated trail activities; does related work as required. Work is performed under
regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Performing a variety of building and grounds maintenance activities; performing a variety of building
trades tasks; operating, maintaining and repairing equipment.

     Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of parks, playing fields, playgrounds and other public
     areas.
     Development and maintenance of park trails.
     Some assistance with trail related activities.
     Maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
     Repairs recreation facilities such as picnic shelters, grills and park benches.
     Assists with building maintenance tasks; makes repairs involving carpentry, electrical, air handling
     and plumbing work.
     Repairs dry wall, ceramic tile, floors, etc.
     Prepares and paints interior and exterior of buildings.
     Performs various custodial tasks; cleans, buffs and waxes floors.
     Maintains ball fields; prepares fields for games; ensures fields are ready for games.
     Prepares parks for special events; maintains baseball, softball and football fields; repairs playground
     equipment.
     Removes litter and trash from parks.
     Operates mowers, tractors, dump truck and hand tools in performance of tasks.
     Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe
use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance;
skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under
unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience
as a semiskilled worker in grounds maintenance; trail development and association with trail related activities
a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring exertion in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 20 pounds
of force frequently, and in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing,
stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive
motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual
inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines,
operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the
worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration,
hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of or ability
