Workers Welfare at Stake As Triumph Shut
                   Down

Taguig- Star Performance Inc., sister- company of underwear giant
Triumph International Phils.(TIPI) Inc. are deep in talks with its union as
Triumph announced the closure of its Philippine production line last Saturday,
June 27.

Triumph Phils. Manager Dieter Streicher cited that ‘closure is necessary to avoid
losses and bankruptcy’.

According to Maria Luisa Sol Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Star
Performance Inc. (NMSPI) Union President this is the second round of talks in
an effort to find another option to salvage almost 2,000 jobs and avoid closure of
the company.

“We are open to other options if there is a way to avoid closure” Maria
Luisa Sol added.

NMSPI demanded that if closure is unavoidable the workers be provided
of ’just compensation’ which is over and above to what is provided by law since its
closure is not due to losses.

Sol added that the company must also guarantee them their old jobs
through a last out first in basis, on the event that the company resumes its
Philippine production line.

In spite talks with management, workers remain wary that Triumph will
be forthcoming, especially since the company holds a spotty record in upholding
workers’ rights.

NMSPI added that their company has a pending case of workers rights’
violation in Thailand. Aside from the Philippines, undergarments giant, Triumph
International, also closed its factories in Laos, China and Thailand. ###
