This is a great idea. I've been faced with the situation were I had to provide my insurance company, State Farm, a documentation of all my valuables that were lost when my house caught on fire. I would definitely recommend that you do a home inventory! It could be a quick one at first so you can at least recall the contents that were in your house if you experienced a lost. I would also recommend that you use a service online instead of CD backup b/c it's easier to access and maintain. There are several options I've discovered. I like the web 2.0 online applications, and I found a company that I settled with called eProoft (www.eprooft.com). It'll let you create an inventory and you can create a report to give to your insurance. I am ready now, but let's hope I don't have to deal with that again....
