									            Appling PTSA's "Is Facebook As Good As Face-to-Face?"
                   Student, Parent and Teacher Essay Contest
   Earlier this month Appling PTSA discovered a national essay contest on the subject of
Facebook on-line communication vs. face to face talking. This got us to thinking about how
the parents, teachers, and students felt about this issue. Therefore, here is your opportunity
  to let us know. The guidelines for Appling's contest are listed below. If your child would

                        Appling PTSA's Student Rules and Guidelines

Essay prompts
    1. Do you think Facebook and other social networking sites have had a good or bad effect
        on teen's social development?
    2. Do you feel more or less safe on Facebook than communicating in real life situations?
    3. Do you think Social networking sites have a positive or negative effect on a student's
        schoolwork?

Literature entrants are not to borrow from copyrighted material.

Remember, we need articles of approximately 500 words on each side of this issue, so writers
should consider either defending their argument passionately or playing the devil’s advocate
rather than arguing down the middle.

Presentation:
     Entries are to be approximately 500 words.
     Two copies of the typewritten entry are to be submitted.
     Entries are to reflect grade-appropriate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Format:
    Submit entries on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper
    Submit two copies of essay and entry form by September 18th in a manila folder, clear
        sheet protector, or pocket folder
    Do NOT submit entries with text on both sides of the paper
    Write author's name on the back of each page in case pages become separated.
    Number all pages
    Fill out entry form including parent or guardian signature

Students who are physically challenged may dictate to another person who may type the original
work. Transcribers should make every attempt to retain the same level of language and accuracy
that is reflected in the student's original dictation.


 Winners will be announced at the September 24th PTSA Meeting at 6PM.
 An I-Safe Workshop will be presented following the brief PTSA meeting.
This workshop will be conducted by John Simi of Shelby County Schools and
      will cover several aspects of keeping our kids safe on the internet.
