Suggestions for success:

Online courses are a great way to obtain information and truly learn at your own pace. However, an obstacle that many
people encounter involves organization and time management. In order to succeed in a course of this nature, it is
imperative to create a schedule to make certain you are completing work in a timely manner. An added benefit of taking
this course will be that by its completion, you will have gained the ability to evaluate your learning style which you can
then apply to other courses or situations you may encounter in the future. Additionally, if you find you are having
difficulties accomplishing a task, try to look at it from a different perspective and if you are unable to complete
something, contact me in advance of the assignment due date so I can assist you in solving the problem.

An online course is appropriate for you if you can answer yes to the following:

   I am a very organized individual
   I am able to work well within specific time parameters
   I have excellent time management skills
   I require little to no personal guidance in order to complete assignments
   I am competent with my computer skills
   I troubleshoot problems and think outside of the box for answers
   I anticipate problems / difficulties and am proactive with solutions
   I am able to schedule my exams through the DELTA testing center

Grading:

10%      Listening Assignments
40%      Exams, Homework, HSW (How Stuff Works) assignments
20%      Final exam – not cumulative
30%      Culture – Technology Project

Homework and Late Assignments:

Follow the syllabus and have all assignments turned in before 7 pm on the appropriate date. Any homework, HSW,
listening exercises, culture and grammar exercises are all due on the same day. Late assignments will be reduced by 10%
for each day late. Example: an assignment turned in at 8 pm on the assigned day will be considered late and reduced by
10%. You are always welcome to turn in your assignments early.

Academic Integrity:

Students are expected to work within the letter and spirit of the NC State Code of Student Conduct. Please read the
following carefully by the end of the first week of class - Code of Student Conduct. For an academic integrity
violation: there will be a zero for the assignment, final grade will be reduced by one letter grade, and a report will be
filed with/ the Office of Student Conduct. For a second violation: the student will automatically fail the course and a
second report will be filed with the Office of Student Conduct.

Listening Assignments:

Listening assignments will consist of a short paragraph involving your feedback on the exercise itself and should include
the following: what you liked / did not like about the exercise, whether or not you feel it was beneficial (you can be
honest here), and what you would suggest as an improvement to the exercise. At times I may ask specific questions
about the exercise to make sure you are completing them.

Homework and quizzes:

Homework and quizzes will be emailed to me until the Wolfware and Vista sites are cooperating with me. At that point
you will be able to complete them through the aforementioned sites.

HSW Assignments:

The HSW assignments will consist of you reading the appropriate articles and then emailing me 5 vocabulary words
related to the technology aspects of the article. You may not be able to find the words in a standard dictionary but an
online translator may help. Please email me the vocabulary words in both English and Spanish. As the semester
progresses, some articles will be available in Spanish through a link.
Final Project: Culture / Technology / Society:

Research an engineering design that reflects some aspect of Hispanic culture (see list). It should focus on someplace in
Spain. The idea is to exhibit culture and technology working together and even possibly how this form of technology has
influenced the culture. While writing your paper, please answer the following:
     What is its function?
     What societal needs guided its creation?
     Who uses it?
     What does it reveal about its culture?
     What engineering innovations were used?
     What fields of engineering may have been involved?
     How does it work?
     What purpose does it serve?
     How does it reflect the culture that created it?
     Optionally, explain the basic engineering concept in designing it.

You will have a lot of freedom with this and can begin at any point during the semester. By March 12th you should
email me your idea for your project. You are welcome to view the sample paper and presentation on my website but do
not feel compelled to follow them to the letter because I would like to see what you can create.
Examples from the past were: a presentation on how water from the aqueduct is used today to make beer and how that
affected the local culture, the change from the peseta to the Euro and people’s response (negative response and the actual
making of the coins), food and cooking (regional foods in addition to popularity of dishes), Spanish dancing (flamenco
dancer came to class and an explanation of the steps as well as the history and why it is performed), incorporation of the
AVE in Spain and transportation (done as a skit with comparisons of other methods of transport), Formula One Racing
and how it’s advent is starting to change Spanish culture.

      Wind Power in Spain
      AVE (High Speed Train)

To return to me before the course deadline:

      Produce a visual for presentation in Spanish. Power point is a great tool but you are welcome to use another
       method as long as it can easily be viewed and does not involve purchasing additional software. Other options
       would be Picasa Web, PDFs or any other “slide show” type of program. Email me the project, send me a disc
       through the U.S. mail or bring a copy to my office. Please reduce the file size if you will be emailing the project;
       preferably below 500 kb.
      Written (typed) report – three full pages in English or two full pages in Spanish
      Include a Works Cited page and cite your quotes so I know where you obtained your information.
