AFP Deputy Commissioner John Lawler swore-in 19 new police recruits at
a ceremony at the AFP Barton College today.

Among the official party welcoming the new recruits was ACT Chief Police
Officer, Ms Audrey Fagan.

“Today is the culmination of several months’ extensive training that has
now ended with these men and women graduating as new recruits,” Ms
Fagan said. “These 16 men and three women bring to the AFP and ACT
Policing, skills from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds,” she

Previous working backgrounds of the new police officers include: unsworn
AFP staff members, AFP Protective Service officers, hospitality, Customs
officer, Queensland Police unsworn staff member, sales manager, security
officer, machine operator, Australian Army, IT officer, bank officer,
Australian Navy clearance diver, laboratory technician, training consultant,
British Army (Infantry), drill rig mechanic, courier, dog handler, sales
representative and combat engineer (NZ Defence Force).

“Each new police member brings their family to live and work in our
community,” said Ms Fagan. “I would like to welcome those who have
moved here, who have joined ACT Policing and who have been tasked to
help keep Canberra a safe community.”
