Learning Objectives

   After studying this unit, you’ll be able to:
   guess the meaning of unknown words from
    context;
   follow comparison and contrast techniques
    employed in the text;
   appreciate beauty in different ways.

   Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary韦氏大
    学词典;韦氏词典 defines “beauty” as:

   The quality or aggregate[ 'ægrigeit ]总计 of quality
    in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the
    senses or pleasurably exalt [ ig'zɔ:lt ]使升高,提
    高 the mind or spirit.
Lead-in

   There are several types of beauty:
   ---- People can be physically beautiful due to
    their features or the clothes they wear.
   ---- People can have inner beauty due to their
    warm personalities.
   ---- People can be beautiful because of their
    talents and kind actions.

   In using the context to help you guess
    unknown vocabulary, you can refer first to
    immediate context and then to the wider
    context in which a word is found.

   The immediate context is the sentence in which a
    word is found, and sometimes the sentences
    immediately before and after this.
   The wider context can include other sentences and
    even other paragraphs in a text.
   Both forms of context can often provide important
    information which helps you guess the meaning of
    unfamiliar words.

   Context provides readers lots of clues to deduce推论,演
    绎出 the unknown words. The main contextual clues

    include:
   A. definition (定义): The signal words are: be, be
    called, be termed, mean, can be defined as, refer to,
    be known as, signify, denote. The signal
    punctuations are: brackets ( ), dash ----, comma, etc.
   B. synonym (同义): The signal words are: that is,
    that is to say, in other words, etc.

   C. antonym (反义): The signal words are:
    although, while, whereas, however, but, yet,
    on the contrary, in contrast, etc.
   D. examples (举例): The signal words are:
    such as, unlike, for instance, for example, a
    case in point, etc.
   E. cause and effect relations (因果关系); The
    signal words are: because, because of, as,
    since, for, etc.
