Mission Statement- The purpose of FOCUSED is to give support, show respect, and encourage
African American Males to accomplish achievement through accountability. As young focused
men we are trying to build a strong network full of balanced individuals. It is our responsibility
to increase the importance of a well-built network, building a brotherhood atmosphere for all
men though which we can grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. As the Inner Circle grows
we will represent not just ourselves but our families, friends, communities and future generations
through involvement in our communities. We are building a foundation for future generations
through a solid network, accountability, and achievement from FOCUSED individuals.

                                       History of FOCUSED
In August 2008, the vision of FOCUSED was placed in the heart of Gordon Taylor after hearing
an influential speech by Judson Robinson, CEO of the Houston Urban League, during an
INROADS leadership training, located at Texas Southern University at the Jesse Jones School of
Business. In this vision, the dream of creating a network for successful and goal oriented African
American males was key to developing this profound organization. In addition, premiers such as
Black in America and disasters like Hurricane Ike furthered the significance of this God given
vision.
Gordon Taylor selected African American males based upon their talents, achievements, and
their desire to change their cultural social status. The founding brothers of this organization
were from several universities across the country, from Stanford University to the University of
Miami. Their interest levels included Business, Engineering, Music, and Ministry. This diversity
would eventually allow them to rely on each other for help and support throughout their lives
whether it be for business contacts or spiritual empowerment.
Once the criteria were put in place, Taylor selected 23 members. For guidance and support, he
chose a 22 member Senior Board of Advisors that included family members, coaches, family
friends, and mentors.
In September 2008, Gordon held the first meeting at Texas State University- San Marcos. At this
meeting, six brothers (men) set the standards of the organization. The name of the organization,
FOCUSED, was chosen at the second meeting. After the second meeting, Taylor nominated
Vernon Wright as Vice-President, Phillip Guinn as Keeper of Records, Miles Dotson as Head of
Events, and Justan Vaughn and Fred Clark as Head of Promotions and Marketing.
During the December 2008 meeting, the young men established the values and mission
statement, and fellowshipped with each other.

I am interested in becoming a member of FOCUSED because of the vision and direction that this
group of talented African American men are heading towards. As an achievement oriented male
getting ready to finish my last year of high school, I feel that the mentoring partnership of this
organization will help me in my future endeavors.


  •     What is your focus?
My focus is geared towards belief that all things are possible for those that believe in Jesus
Christ, absolute success in all endeavors I choose to undertake, belief in myself and the ability to
never give up on what I believe in.
   •    How can you help FOCUSED grow and be more active in our society
I can help FOCUSED grow by being an active member, believing and supporting in the
FOCUSED mission statement/charter. Being active in our society will come by maximum
participation in FOCUSED.



  •      Our values are honesty, hard work, persistence, achievement, dedication, leadership, and
         integrity. Which of these is most important to you and why?
Integrity and dedication are the two most important values to me because integrity and
dedication encompass all of the other values identified. Without integrity, we are lost. Without
dedication, we have no directed focus. These two values encompass a well rounded individual
that is sure to exhibit the other values above.
