Syllabus/Substitute Plan

Special Class Instructions

School-Wide Tutorials:       Only AVID students may use subject area textbooks
                             U.S. History/American Cultures students may use U.S.
                             History textbooks only
                             All books must be checked out & back in at the end of
                             tutorial

Tutors:                      There are two college tutors who will work from 8:00
                             12:00 on Wednesday & Friday (Danny & Kiana)
                             Period 3 has an additional tutor. She is a senior and is
                             acting as a peer tutor. She is comfortable helping with
                             math tutorials (Camelia)

AVID Subject Area Tutorials: Group run and overseen by the college tutors & teacher.
                            There will usually be a couple of math groups, based on
                            level, a science group and a misc group. This group will
                            need to be watched, keep them focused!
                            Students fill out a Tutorial Worksheet on Wed & Fri, which
                            the tutors will grade & separate into groups

Binder Checks:               The tutors will collect the Tutorial Worksheets at the tardy
                             bell. Then, they will collect the student’s binders (Wed A-
                             L/Fri M-Z) & will grade them. The tutors will then turn in
                             the binder check worksheet to be entered into the grades

SSR:                         Silent Sustained Reading: the students are required to bring
                             a novel to class daily. This will be scheduled on Mondays,
                             but if students finish tutorial early, they can practice SSR

AVID Curriculum:             Books: Strategies for Success (red)
                                    College & Careers (yellow)
                                    Writing Curriculum (green)
                             There is a class set of each book (they never leave the
                             room)

SAT & PSAT Prep:             Books are on the bookshelf with the lesson plans (Teacher
                             Copies)
                             These lessons need to be photocopied into packets for the
                             students (no class set)
CAHSEE:                     California High School Exit Exam: Books are on the
                            bookshelf with the lesson plans (Teacher Copies)
                            These lessons may need to be photocopied into packets for
                            the students (no class set; the students were assigned to
                            pick a copy of each book up from the office; there were
                            limited copies, so some students may be without books)

Lesson Plans

March
Week 1:     Monday (Late Start) (March 1-5)
Freshmen:   Hand out & discuss directions for University Search Project
Sophomores: Remind Sophomores to bring their Exit Exam Booklets
            from the office this week
            Pair, Share: In groups of 2 (20 minutes)
                 Discuss anxieties about the CAHSEE
                 Discuss good feelings about the CAHSEE (I’ve heard its not that
                    hard)
                 Each student will quick write about the their feelings about taking
                    the CAHSEE (15 minutes)
                 Teacher discuss CAHSEE as a requirement for graduation & what
                    happens if they fail the exam
Juniors:    SAT Prep – Verbal “Sentence Completions” (pg. 67-74)
Seniors:    Hand out & discuss directions for Making a Budget Project
            Allow seniors to start Listing/Clustering ideas for their projects
            Remind juniors & seniors – “Early Bird” registration for Saddleback
            is due starting today! First come, first served.
