Los Angeles County – Department of Mental Health Homeless and Housing Division RENTAL ASSISTANCE / EVICTION PREVENTION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Rental Assistance is available to mental health clients who are HOMELESS and do not have the resources to move into an affordable apartment OR are in danger of being EVICTED due to lack of rent payment. Clients meeting the criteria set forth below will be eligible for the first month’s rent and/or security deposit or, to prevent eviction, the payment of one-month rent in arrears. Clients can apply only once every 12 months. Each Service Area will be allocated one-eighth of the funds available. At the current time, the amount per Service Area is $16,348.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The client must be: Homeless as defined by the federal definition of homelessness. A current consumer of mental health services. Clinically stable as assessed/evaluated by the case manager. Capable of living independently as assessed by the case manager. Compliant with current treatment plan/medication. Able to pay a share of the rental cost based on ability to pay (general rule is the client is not spending more than 80% of income for rent, 85% if utilities are included). Receives below the established income limits set by the federal government. Recipient of a Section 8 Voucher, Shelter Plus Care Certificate or other subsidized funding is desirable but not mandatory.
