Tshwaraganang Barolong project pushing the frontiers of poverty

North West – The National Development Agency (NDA) today handed over the
Tshwaragang Barolong Project (TBP) at the Madibogo village in the North West. The
NDA approved a grant amount of R833 380 which the project used to purchase
equipment and for capacity building.

The capacity building aspect consisted of financial management, financial planning and
sales, as well as marketing skills to ensure availability of markets and sustainability in
the long term.

The project, which is Mrs Mapule Lebakaeng’s brainchild started with only three women
in 2000 and now has 23 members consisting of 20 women and three men who are all
direct beneficiaries. It was started with poverty alleviation in mind and also to improve
the standard of living for women living in the Motsitlane section of Madibogo village.

Lebakaeng was touched by poverty in her village and saw the need for a poverty
alleviation project that could tap into the potential of the unemployment women. A
seamtress by profession, she taught the women in her village sewing skills and as the
project took off, introduced other profit generating projects.

“We did not start this project as a hobby. For us, it was more about survival. We each
had to contribute R2 a month in order to buy sewing material as we had no sponsor
when we started. The NDA then saw potential in our project and that’s when we took off
financially and introduced other activities such as knitting, chemical production, ice-
cream and juice production”, Lebakaeng said

The project’s current activities include household cleaning products, toiletry, knitting &
sewing, ice cream production, juice and silk screen printing. It supplies uniform, juice
and floor polish to the local schools. Its cleaning chemicals are sold to local shops and
community members.

“We are proud to be associated with Tshwaraganang Barolong. This is an example of
local economic development at its best. The project has created a sizeable number of
beneficiaries and a lot of indirect beneficiaries.

It is also saving locals money by making goods such as juice, polish, uniforms, etc
available locally resulting in a saving for community members who would have had to go
far to access these goods,” said Potlako Ntlatleng, NDA North West Provincial Manager.

TBP received its start-up funding from the Department of Provincial and Local
Government (DPLG) in conjunction with the LED unit of the Ratlou Local municipality.
The value of this grant was R914 000 and it was awarded to TBP for the building of its
head office and basic equipment. The National Development Agency (NDA) awarded
TBP with a grant of R 833 380 for starting the project activities.
