                            ADULT HIGH SCHOOL—FREE OF CHARGE
The Perth Amboy Adult High School Program is designed to provide adults (16 years old and older) with
a new alternative for obtaining a high school diploma. A certificate of consent must be executed for 16
and 17 year olds.
                      GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & CREDIT OPTIONS
To graduate, a student must complete program requirements equivalent to a total of 120 credits, which
must include 20 in English (Communications), 10 in American History, 10 in science, 15 in math, 10 in
practical performing arts, 5 in career exploration, 5 in health, 5 in world history, and the rest in electives.
In addition, a candidate for graduation must pass the State-required test to show proficiency in reading,
writing and math (HSPA).

Credits may be granted on the basis of various options:
Transcript from an accredited high school
Work experience
On-the-job training
Military experience
Credit by examination, up to 5 credits per examination
College courses
Classroom participation in the Perth Amboy Adult High School

An additional 8 credits can be earned in Consumer Economics I (2.5), Consumer Economics II (2.5),
Community Resources (5) or Vocational English (5).

The completion of course requirements - not a fixed number of months, weeks, days or hours - determines
whether or not a student earns credits. Deadline for completing graduation requirements: first week in
June.

                                                GUIDANCE
Essential to the success of the program are the services of counselors who make themselves available to
students at all times. The counselor helps the student plan his or her program from the first day in school
to graduation. The counselor assists the student in obtaining documentation of previous studies and life
skills learned outside the classroom.

This program prepares students for New Jersey’s High School equivalency tests, which are given in
English and Spanish. Instruction focuses on review and development needs in the test areas: English,
Social Studies, Science, Literature, and Mathematics. Students who wish to take the Spanish GED tests
will be given instruction in Spanish. When students are ready to take the GED Exam, they are scheduled
with the Career Counselor to practice taking GED online. Students wishing to take the GED without

                                            PRE GED CLASSES
Basic skills are taught in the areas of reading and mathematics as a basis for building of self-motivation
and developmental learning. Instruction takes into account the individual and cultural differences and
other environmental factors that can be turned to the students’ advantage.

Skills in reading and mathematics are reinforced through a higher-level instructional approach. In
addition, the students are introduced into the basics of writing with emphasis on grammar and higher
thinking skills.

                                      GED TESTING CENTER
As a community service of the Perth Amboy Board of Education, GED tests are given at the Adult School
Testing Center, 178 Barracks Street. The tests, authorized by the Department of Education, are open to
English and Spanish speaking residents of the state.

Test areas include writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature and the arts, and
mathematics. The Spanish GED tests include a component dealing with English as a Second Language.

Registration is held once a month. You must call the testing center for dates and time of registration.
Two forms of identification are required, one being a recent picture I.D. A $25 money order made
payable to the Commissioner of Education must also be presented. At this time you will be given an
appointment for a test date.

For information call the GED Testing Center at (732) 376-6243.

This program helps foreign residents prepare to take the test before they are given citizenship status.
