Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 – (Dallas, TX) – America’s best kept secret? Not anymore. It seems consumers
are taking a second look at credit unions. According to the latest Texas Credit Union Profile, since 2006
Texas credit unions have seen a steady growth in assets and membership. In fact, from year-end 2008 to
third quarter 2009, 211,000 new memberships were opened in Texas credit unions. Consumers who’ve
yet to find their way to a credit union can gain helpful tips on selecting the right financial institution that
best fulfills their needs by tuning into to the Texas Credit Union League’s (the League) Dec. 17th blog talk
radio program, Your Money, Your Matters.

“When it comes to their money, consumers have a tremendous amount of faith in credit unions. Over an
eight-month period, 84.4 percent of Texas credit unions saw a notable increase in assets. Clearly
consumers see credit unions as safe havens. As a matter of fact, in 2007 (when the economy first began
to decline) 113,000 Texans joined credit unions. And credit union membership continues to climb,
surpassing 7.35 million in September 2009,” notes League president and CEO Dick Ensweiler.

Ensweiler says it’s not uncommon for credit unions to experience this kind of growth. “Historically,
when the economy gets tough, credit unions grow,” he continues. “We’ve been strong, safe, and secure
for 75 years, and in these difficult times, consumers seem to have greater trust and confidence in credit
unions.”

At a time when many financial institutions have tightened their lending standards making it difficult for
consumers to borrow, credit unions continue to make responsible loans. From year-end 2008 to third
quarter 2009, loan growth among Texas credit unions increased by 8.9 percent.

“This is phenomenal. It affirms that when you put people over profit, everybody wins,” adds Ensweiler.

A TNS Trust Survey confirms this. Despite large-scale brand marketing initiatives, TNS’ survey finds
that the nation's large national banks, insurance companies, and brokerages are continuing to slip further
behind smaller regional banks and credit unions in consumer trust ratings. Apparently, consumers believe
the smaller players like credit unions have greater understanding and reliability than the large national
banks.

Consumers wishing to make the switch to a credit union should tune into the League’s 30-minute blog
talk radio episode, “The Right Relationship can help you Achieve your Financial Goals.” Ensweiler says
consumers should know that credit unions offer a wide variety of competitively-priced deposit, credit and
other related services. And the good news is that credit unions field of membership are not nearly as
restrictive as they once were, so practically anyone can join.

Join Ensweiler, host of this popular blog talk radio show, as he chats with two prominent Texas credit
union CEOs about the steps consumers should take to select a credit union that best fulfills their needs,
and why it’s important that they only do business with a federally-insured financial institution, like a
credit union.

Blog Talk Radio is a social radio network that allows users to connect quickly and directly with their
