                                Kate Hoedebeck

It’s October!! And October has to be my favorite month in Dallas. Certainly weather-wise it’s the best month. It’s
finally cool enough to play in the park every day, eat outside, and wear those great pair of brown boots I got last year
(and the ones I’ve bought for the last 3 years). Some years we even get treated to a real fall, complete with red and
yellow foliage.
To top it off, the month ends with my favorite holiday – Halloween! Why Halloween? First, I love costumes. Okay,
not really the costumes, but the accessories. Some of my favorite costumes over the years have involved wands
(Tinkerbell), swords (pirate), and a black wig (Cleopatra). Of course this year I’ll be lucky to have t-shirt with a
pumpkin on it. Now, I put all my energy into the right size 3T costume (mermaid – but not Arial). Second,
Halloween is the one holiday that’s supposed to be kind of tacky. I love all the fake skeletons, spiders and spider
webs, the tombstones, ghosts & jack-o-lanterns. One year I spray painted 2 dozen white roses black for a Halloween
party. (Yes this was before children.). And don’t even get me started on all the ―creepy‖ food. I just cut out a
―recipe‖ to turn donut holes into eyeballs by dipping them in white chocolate and using an M&M and red icing to
replicate blood shot pupils. My husband doesn’t quite understand this Halloween obsession of mine, but he joins
right in and puts out those tombstones for me!
The other great thing about October is all the carnivals, fairs and festivals around Dallas. They are great ways to
spend time outside in the great weather – and usually cheap or even free entertainment for your little ones. Some of
my favorites are listed below. So get out there and enjoy the great weather. I hope to see you at one of these
events or the park this month!
State Fair of Texas – deep fried peaches & cream, corny dogs, frito pies… I’ve heard they have rides and livestock
there too. Sept 25 – Oct 18, Fair Park
The Great Pumpkin Festival a the Arboretum – what’s cuter than taking pictures of your little pumpkins surrounded
by pumpkins? Check the website ( for special days with face painting, magicians, petting
zoos…. Through Nov 1
Preston Royal Fall Festival – The southwest corner of Preston Royal gets festive with pony rides, a bounce house,
face painting, and petting zoo while the restaurants serve food and drinks. Oct 16, 3-9pm Gazeebo Burger parking
Glen Cove/Meadow Park Halloween Parade & Celebration – Dress up your kids (you can dress up too) and join the
neighborhood for a piñata and treats at Glen Cove park. Oct 25 2-4pm
Disney Streets Halloween Parade – Starts at Northaven & Snow White. Come in costume and enjoy the parade,
piñatas, cider & popcorn. Oct 25, 4pm

Also lots of churches and schools have fun fall events and welcome non-members to come have fun!

October Book Club - The Crowning Glory of Calla Lilly Ponder by Rebecca Wells
The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder is the sweet, sexy, funny tale of Calla Lily's life set in Wells' ever-growing
fictional Louisiana. In the small river town of La Luna, Calla Lily enjoys a blissful childhood under the loving light of the
Moon Lady, the feminine force that will guide her throughout her life. From her mother, M'Dear, Calla learns the old,
womanly art of healing through "fixing hair."

On the same river banks, Calla tastes the sweetness of first love. But when a broken heart knocks the breath out of
her, Calla transforms hurt into inspiration and heads for the wild and colorful city of New Orleans to study at
L'AcadÉmie de BeautÉ de Crescent. In that extravagant big river city, she comes to understand fully the power of her
"healing hands" to change lives and soothe pain, including her own.

A tale of family and friendship, tragedy and triumph, loss and love, The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder features the
warmth, humor, soul, and wonder that have made Wells one of today's most cherished writers, and gives us an
unforgettable new heroine to treasure.
