Summer Solstice Bike Ride A MULTI-ROUTE RIDE TO THE ‘HENGE’ Saturday, 20 June 2009 Wooden Spoon are teaming up with some of the top Premiership and lower league Rugby Clubs to celebrate the Summer Solstice in style with a multi- route bike ride to the ‘Henge’. The Summer Solstice Bike Ride is a one-day cycle ride to Barbury Castle, the site of an Iron Age hill fort on the northern edge of the Marlborough Downs. To take part, At www.spoonchallenges.com challengers must pledge to raise a minimum of £300 in support of Wooden Spoon’s work with mentally, socially and physically disadvantaged youngsters, but can choose how tough their own challenge will be by selecting their start point from the grounds of one of the many rugby clubs taking part. London Irish - Madjeski Stadium (45 miles), Bath (50 miles), Bristol (50 miles), Cardiff (98 miles), Gloucester (45 miles), Worcester (70 miles) and Harlequins (101 miles) have all signed up to support the event by providing their grounds as start points, entering players and staff members in the event, and promoting the event to their fan base. The terrain of the routes will vary between start points but most include a combination of minor roads, tow paths, tracks and Sustrans routes, so mountain bikes or road bikes with cyclo cross tyres are recommended. There will be a staggered start from each start point and pit stops en route with marshals and support riders. Routes and start times will be designed to ensure that all challengers will arrive at the fin- ish site by 10.00pm when darkness falls. Chal- lengers will be required to carry a minimum amount of kit including front and rear lights and cycle repair kits and all must wear a hel- met. There will be a celebration barbecue, bar and entertainment in a tented village at the Barbury Castle finish site with a special solstice breakfast served at sunrise. Overnight camping facilities will be available on-site, with additional accommodation available nearby for those not willing to rough-it! Return transportation to the start points will be available for those who require it and their bikes on Sunday morning.
