SOUTHPORT AND ORMSKIRK HOSPITAL NHS TRUST

                          POLICY GOVERNING
                        REGISTRATION OF STAFF

1 Policy Statement
All staff required to be registered with their professional body employed by
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust must be in possession of a
    current registration.

2 Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to the following Staff Groups working within the Trust.
Qualified staff of any grade, full time, part time and bank staff:

    • Medical and Dental Staff
    • Nurses and Midwives
    • Professional and Technical ‘B’ Staff
    • Professions Allied to Medicine

3 Responsibilities
3.1 It is the responsibility of all staff to maintain their registration with their
professional body in order to practice.

             This would include:

             (a) Submitting notification of intention to practice.

             (b) Providing the necessary evidence required by the appropriate
professional body to support remaining on the register.

3.2 Ward or department managers are responsible for checking that all
qualified staff on their ward or department are registered to practice.

3.2.1 The Personnel Department will make contact with staff whose
registration is due for renewal on a monthly basis. A letter will
be issued to individuals at the beginning of the month of expiry
requesting a copy of their registration.

                                                              POLICY NO: PERS 16

3.2.2 The identified person in charge of each shift is responsible for
checking the registration of agency staff reporting for duty.

3.2.3 All MIDWIVES must comply with the requirements regarding
notification to practice by submitting copies of certificates of
attendance of relevant study to the Lead Supervisor of
                   Midwives.

4 Bank Staff/Agency Staff
4.1 On reporting for duty, all Agency staff should present their NMC PIN
card / registration document for checking by the nurse/midwife or
             department manager in charge.

4.2 The Nurse Bank Management System highlights registrations which
are due for renewal. All Bank Nurses will be asked to present a NMC
Pin Card as renewed for checking. Failure to comply will result in their
name being withdrawn from the Nurse Bank.

5 Expired Registration
5.1 Staff not in possession of a valid registration will be deemed as,
professionally, making themselves unavailable for work and should
therefore only undertake the duties of unqualified staff. Payment
during this period will be at the appropriate rate of pay for unqualified
             staff.

5.2 Proof of posting will not be accepted as confirmation of registration.
Registration will only be confirmed through providing a current PIN
             card / registration document.
