Blog This- Gossip and Peer Pressure I have a confession to make. I like the celebrity smut magazines. I read the headlines in aisle at supermarket and I look at a celebrity gossip sites. I want to know what Angelina Jolie is wearing and what the it hand bag will be. Gossip is invading our lives. There are shows and websites dedicated to celebrity gossip. On these web sites, other people leave their comments. Things like girl did you see how skinny Nicole Ritchie is and has Britney has lost her mind. 1. What is so appealing about gossip magazines? 2. Why are we so concerned with celebrity lives? Gossip also invades our everyday life. We talk about our friends and the people we do not like. There are many reasons we talk about other people. Some times we want to feel like we are popular. Other times, we want to get back at those who have hurt us. The problem with starting and passing gossip is we usually end up hurting ourselves in addition to hurting the target of our words. I imagine that gossip has always been a problem, even in Jesus’ time. Can you imagine Jesus standing around with the disciples and talking about King Herod’s latest escapades? 3. Without going into to many details, what is the most recent piece of gossip you have heard? Was it true? 4. What is the difference between ‘Gossip’ and ‘information’? 5. Read Proverbs 16:27-28. What are the benefits of being part of a gossip? What are the negative consequences? Have you ever had a friend that you trusted only to find out that friend was not telling the truth about you? I do not know about you but when that has happen to me, I was devastated and embarrassed. To be honest, this is not a feeling that gets better with age. When you trust some one with your deepest secrets, you trust them with a piece of your heart. When I open up to someone, I trust them completely. It takes a long time for someone to gain my complete trust. 6. What does it take for someone to gain your trust? 7. Read Proverbs 25:19. Have you ever trusted the wrong person? What happened? 8. How can you decide if someone is trustworthy? 9. How can you make yourself more trustworthy? Gossip has a huge impact on the people involved on both sides. For the people gossiping, they use some of their trustworthiness. For the people gossiped about, they are hurt and learn to stop trusting others. Do you think it is part of God’s plan for us to hurt others with our words? I do not think that is what he has planed for me. However, to be honest, it is something I mess up on occasion. I am not proud of that but I know I am a work in progress. God’s plan for all of us is to be the best that we can be and to use our words like h e would. Closing Prayer- God, thanks for being an example as how to use our words to encourage and not to tear down. So many times, my stupidity or my hurt feelings get in the way of my being like you. Please comfort all of the people who I have hurt with my words and heal my heart for those times that I have been hurt by others. Please help me to continue to grow in your grace. Amen.
