Entry Requirements for Graduate Teacher
Programme
A degree or an equivalent qualification.
A degree or an equivalent qualification must be awarded before 31 st August 2007
Maths & English GCSE Grade C or above C (or equivalent). Must be achieved
before 31st August 2007.
If wishing to teach primary GCSE Science subject grade C or above (or equivalent)
must be achieved before 31st August 2007.
Must have paid or voluntary, experience of working with relevant age group of
young people Recommendation from an appropriate person e.g. Headteacher.
Must have the experience, maturity and skills to enable successful completion of an
employment based training route.
Able to demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written
English.
Must be willing to provide details in order to investigate:
- Criminal Record Background (Disclosure and List 99)
- Physical and mental fitness to teach.
- Permission to work in the UK
Stoke-on-Trent Selection Criteria
In the event of more eligible candidates applying than there are places available the
Graduate Teacher Programme will apply the following selection criteria:
Range and standards of qualification to demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge.
The relevance, duration and quality of the workplace experience.
The quality of the graduate’s reference e.g., commitment, suitability to teach, subject
knowledge and interpersonal skills.
Trainee places are allocated into the following groups:
A Secondary shortage subjects – English, mathematics, science, modern foreign
languages, design technology, information technology, religious education and music.
B High quality secondary applications in any subject.
C High quality primary applications.

All applicants please read the following guidelines carefully:
A complete photocopy of the following documents must be provided with your application form.
Original documents will be required at interview. DO NOT send original documents with the application
form.
You must produce one of the following documents:
A passport showing that the holder is a British Citizen or has the right of abode in the UK.
A passport, residence permit or national identity card showing that the holder is a national of a European
Economic Area country or Switzerland.
A document issued by the Home Office which has an endorsement stating that the holder has a current right
of residence in the UK as the family member of a national from a European Economic Area country or
Switzerland who is a resident in the UK.
A passport or travel document endorsed to show that the holder can stay indefinitely in the UK, or has no
time limit on their stay.
An application registration card issued by the Home Office to an asylum seeker stating that the holder is
permitted to take employment.
Plus one of the following:
A document giving the person’s permanent National Insurance Number and name. This could be a P45’
P60’ National Insurance Card or letter from a Government Agency. Please note that a temporary National
Insurance number (starting with TN) is NOT acceptable.
A full birth certificate issued in the UK that includes the name of the holder’s parents.
A birth certificate issued in the Channel Islands.
A certificate of registration or naturalisation stating the holder is a British citizen.
A letter or Immigration Status Document, with an endorsement, issued by the Home Office to the holder
which indicates that the person named in it can stay indefinitely in the UK or has no time limit on their stay.
A passport, letter or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder is able to stay in the UK and
can take the employment offered
Education and Qualifications
Stoke-on-Trent Graduate Teacher Programme will need to check your original certificates for GCSEs, degrees
and equivalent qualifications. If in doubt about equivalence, get advice from an accredited ITT provider.
GCSEs or equivalent qualifications
Please give details of GCSEs or equivalent qualifications and when they were obtained. All candidates for ITT
st
must have attained the standard required for GCSE grade C in English and mathematics before 31 August
2007. GTP candidates who will be teaching the primary age range must also have attained the standard
required for GCSE grade C or above in science.

The G.T.P will not accept candidates who have previously failed QTS assessment or
withdrawn from a QTS programme unless there are exceptional circumstances.
The applicant must seek a written explanation from the previous training provider so
reasons for withdrawal can be established. This explanation must be included with
the application form otherwise the candidate will not be considered for interview.
