          Distinguished Physician, Specialist in Infectious Disease, named
                 Chief of Staff at Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center

PHOENIX − Raymond Chung, MD, has been named chief of Staff of the Carl T. Hayden VA
Medical Center in Phoenix effective September 5, 2006.

Dr. Chung, is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease and is a retired Army

Dr. Chung joined the Veterans Health Administration in 2001 and most recently served as the
Associate Chief of Staff for Education for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San
Antonio. He also held an appointment at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San
Antonio as an Associate Professor of Medicine

A native of Honolulu, Dr. Chung served in the U. S. Army from 1975 to 2001, retiring as a
Colonel. While in the Army, he finished his residency in internal medicine in 1978 at Letterman
Army Medical Center in San Francisco and his fellowship in infectious disease in 1981 at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Chung also served in Korea; at Ft Leonard
Wood, Missouri; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research; and in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. While
stationed at Walter Reed Dr. Chung served as Chief of Infectious Disease at the Army Medical
Center and as a Consultant to the Army Surgeon General.

During his military, career Dr. Chung earned the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service
Medal (second oak leaf cluster). He received the Laureate Award from the American College of
Physicians/American Society of Internal Medicine, of which he is a Fellow. He is also a Fellow
of the Infectious Disease Society of America. He received the James L. Leonard Award for
Excellence in Teaching Internal Medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health
Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland

Dr. Chung earned his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970
and his medical degree from the Johns Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii in 1975. He earned
a master’s degree in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio in 2006.

The Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center has been serving veterans in Maricopa
County since 1951. We are a level one tertiary care facility that offers a variety of services to
more than 75,000 veterans. We currently have 130 inpatient beds for medical and surgical
patients, 80 beds for nursing home patients and 40 inpatient beds for mental health patients. We
are honored to serve our veterans who have paid the price for us to enjoy our freedoms.
As the new Chief of Staff at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, Dr. Chung will assist with
medical oversight of VA health care for nearly 75,000 veterans in Maricopa County. The
CTHVAMC is a level 1 tertiary care facility with 130 inpatient beds for medicine and surgery; 70
beds for skilled nursing home care and 40 inpatient beds for mental health. The CTHVAMC
provides a continuum of care through a primary care model of health care delivery. They offer
four primary care clinics, six VA health care clinics in other cities such as Show Low, Sun City
and Mesa, and they have several specialty clinics within the hospital. The CTHVAMC earns
high marks from the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and was
recently honored with an Innovations Award from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of
Government for its electronic medical record system called VISTA.

Dr. Chung joins will oversee a medical staff of 168 physicians, 40 Nurse Practitioners and 400
registered nurses. His role as Chief of Staff is a senior leadership position, in which he will
assist the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in continuing its proud tradition of serving veterans
in Maricopa County since 1951.
