                 CANNERY HELPER
               CANNERY BOOKKEEPER

Bedford County is currently accepting applications for two (2) part-time seasonal
positions to work at the New London Community Cannery located at 12404 East
Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, behind New London Academy, for the following:
Cannery Helper ($6.34/hour); Cannery Bookkeeper ($6.73/hour). These
positions involve working approximately 10-16 hours per week for not more than
six months per year (July - December).

   •   Candidates for the Cannery Helper position will perform manual labor
       tasks involved in the daily operation of the cannery and will assist in
       advising patrons in proper canning procedures

   •   Candidates for the Cannery Bookkeeper position will be required to
       handle daily cash transactions and be able to keep accurate records as
       well as assist in advising patrons on proper canning procedures

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs manual duties involved in the operation of a Community Cannery.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This position is usually filled on a part-time temporary basis involving approximately 10-16
hours per week, not more than 6 months per year. Employees perform manual labor
tasks involved in the daily operation of a Community Cannery.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Assists in making minor repairs to plumbing, electrical and steam lines and equipment
        operated thereby as required;
Advises patrons on proper methods of preparing foodstuffs for blanching or cooking
        preparatory to canning.
Advises patrons on proper methods of cleaning and filling containers;
Assists in capping cans filled with foodstuffs and loads retorts as required;
Assists in unloading retorts and cooling cooked foodstuffs as necessary;
Assists in cleaning and maintaining cannery in a sanitary condition on a daily basis;
Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Good working knowledge of plumbing, electrical and steam pressure line repairs; some
knowledge on operation of low pressure steam boilers; some knowledge on proper
methods of foodstuffs preparation for canning; considerable knowledge on sanitation and
cleaning of food preparation and canning equipment; ability to follow simple oral or written
directions; good physical condition.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of at least grade school education and some experience in domestic food
preparation and storage.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs operational duties in the operation of a Community Cannery.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is a position usually filled on a part-time temporary basis involving approximately 10-
16 hours work per week for not more than 6 months per year. Employee will be required
to handle daily cash transactions and sales of cans, keep accurate records, make up bank
deposits, assist in advising patrons on proper canning procedures and in cleaning
premises daily.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Issues membership cards, recording information on all members as required;
Conducts can sales, recording all sales transactions in proper record books;
Maintains thermal processing records as required daily.
Maintains can "tear-down" records as required;
Prepares daily bank deposit; reconciles cash from sales transactions;
Advises patrons on preparing foodstuffs for blanching or cooking preparatory to canning;
Advises patrons on proper methods of cleaning and filling containers;
Assists in cleaning and maintaining cannery on daily basis as required;
Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of general bookkeeping and office management operations;
considerable knowledge on the proper methods of food preparation for canning; some
knowledge or sanitation and cleaning of food preparation and canning equipment; Ability
to follow simple oral or written directions; good physical condition; ability to maintain
various types of simple records.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a standard high school course with basic bookkeeping training and
experience; some experience in domestic food preparation and canning.
