Instructions I
CPS procedures
Before class Download software to your computer
One-time activity Create your folder on local computer
Create your database in the folder
Create class (should be online)

Save the CPS folder to Flash Drive

(We recommend you connect CPS to the network when you use it all though some feature of CPS works fine without network
connection.)
---------- One-time preparation when the semester starts ----------
To download the CPS software from eInstruction
1. Go to www.einstruction.com
2. Click the Downloads button under User Area
3. Select “CPS for PC Full Release” for a Windows machine or “CPS for Mac Full Release” for a Mac
4. Follow the prompts to install.
5. If you are installing on a university computer you may get an error message saying that you do not have
administrator access to the machine, necessary to install software. In that case, call LSS at 4-0400. They
should be able to remotely access your computer and allow the installation.
To create your database
13. Create a new folder for CPS on the desktop
14. Name the folder
Later you will need to put not only your database but also all other related files in this folder
15. Double click cps.exe icon on the desktop
16. Click „Create a new CPS database‟ under New File and click OK
17. To save the file, select the folder you created, type the file name, and click Save
Each time QuickStart pops up, close or minimize it.
To create a class (should be online)
1. Click the Classes tab
2. Click the New (Create a new class) button
3. Choose Higher Education as institution type and click Next
4. Click No (if you are the first time user of CPS) and click Next
5. Type the Instructor Setup Code provided by e-Instruction (Contact IDS if you do not know the code) and
click Next
6. Select University of Kansas and click Next
7. Type Username and Password
8. Type First Name, Last Name, and Email Address and click Next
9. Type Class Name, select Class Start Date and Class End Date, and click Next
(Make sure the Class End Date is during or after finals week! You won’t have access to the site after this date.)
10. Print out Class Key (and student‟s instruction) by clicking Print button and click Next
Please give this Class Key to your students. They will need the key when they enroll in your CPSOnline class.
You should also save this file and post it in your Bb course site for students who lose their copy! You will also
receive an email confirmation of your new CPSOnline class.
To import students (should be online)(Repeat this especially in the beginning of the semester)
When you open the CPS database, it automatically updates student roster by connecting eInstruction‟s server.
You can also manually update the roster following the steps below indicated.
1. Select class on the left pane
2. Click Import
3. Select CPSOnline and click Next
4. Choose Higher Education and click Next
5. Type Username and Password, select University of Kansas, and click Next
6. Click the box of class you are going to import and click Next

Lesson Plan 1: Using CPS with PowerPoint
(Preparation before class)
You can run CPS and your PowerPoint sides separately. However, if you add PowerPoint to CPS database, you will
be able to create more unified view on the computer screen.
1. To start CPS, double click your database file (.cps) on the desktop
2. Click the Lessons tab
3. Locate the mouse pointer on PowerPoint folder on the left pane and right click (For Mac users locate the
mouse pointer on Presentations folder on the left pane and click pressing ctrl key down)
4. Select Add File from the pop-up menu
5. Use the “Look in” drop-down menu to find the *PowerPoint file, select it, and click Open
Your file will now be seen in the left pane under the PowerPoint folder
*If you are a Mac user, change the file extention of PowerPoint from .ppt to pps. (PowerPoint Show) before you add
it to CPS.
(At the classroom)
6. Move the folder to the classroom computer if you do not use your laptop (It is essential to move not only
your CPS database file but also your PowerPoint file). If you use your own laptop, connect the receiver to
USB and log in the network.
7. Double click the folder to open
8. Double click your database file (.cps)
When your database is open, it is a good idea to check the option settings and condition of the receiver in advance.
9. Pull-down Settings on the top menu bar
10. Select Delivery Options
11. Under Teacher Managed tab, click „Show Pads That Have Responded‟ if you teach large class
12. Remove the checkmark from Show Large Screen from Verbal Questions
13. Click „Show Answer Distribution‟(PC) „Auto Show Histogram‟(Mac) if you need to show histogram after
each question
14. Click Receiver tab
15. Make sure „Higher Ed RF‟(PC) „Radio Frequency for Higher Education‟(Mac) should be selected.
16. Click Detect „CPS Receiver button‟ (PC) „Setup CPS Receiver‟ (Mac) to make sure the computer detects the
receiver (See Trouble shooting a. on next page)
17. Click OK to close the Delivery Options box
After you make sure Lesson tab was selected,
18. Select the PowerPoint file on the left pane
19. Click Engage Lesson
20. Check „Include in Gradebook‟ and „Export to Question Grid‟ and „Automatically Upload Session upon
completion‟ (All of them are recommended for PC users). Click „Automatically Upload Session upon
completion‟ for Mac users.
21. Enter Session Title
22. Choose Session Type
23. Enter Max Points (for PC users only)
24. Click „Create Attendance‟ from this assessment if you need to take attendance (for PC users only)
You also need to select „Include Attendance in Gradebook‟ and „Automatically Upload Attendance‟
respectively. You may put some points.
25. Choose the class from the pull-down menu

27. When the box pops up, tell your students the two digit channel number (such as 02)
28. Look at Students joined indicator on the top of box
29. Click Close button after you make sure all your students joined

Now you see Engage Bar on the bottom of PowerPoint slide. When you ask a question,
30. Click Verbal Question button on the Engage Bar to select the question type, for example True/False (See
Trouble shooting b. if a question box blocks the slide)
31. Click Start
32. Click End after all students responded
33. Histogram appears automatically and select the correct answer if it is appropriate (See Trouble shooting c. if
the histogram does not pops up)
34. Click Close on the histogram window
35. Click CLOSE on the question window and stay in the Engage Bar mode while you forward the slide.
(Trouble shooting)
a. When the receiver is not detected, try to switch the USB slot of the computer. Click Detect CPS Receiver
button again. The receiver should be detected automatically.
b. When you click Verbal Question on the Engage Bar and then the large question box window blocks
PowerPoint slide, click Options button and remove the checkmark from Show Large Screen from Verbal
Questions.
c. If histogram did not appear automatically after the question, click the Delivery Option button in either the
Engage Bar or the question window, and click „Show Answer Distribution‟(PC) „Auto Show
Histogram‟(Mac).
Lesson Plan 2: Using FastGrade to score the quiz embedded in PowerPoint slides
With FastGrade option, you can record the correct answers of all questions you embedded in the slide so that
you do not need to show the correct answer of each question during class.
(Preparation before class)
First, we recommend you add PowerPoint to CPS. Please follow the step-by-step instruction indicated in previous
page. Second, you have to record the correct answers using FastGrade
1. Select your database file (.cps) on the left pane under Lesson tab
2. Click Tools
3. Select Fast Grade…
4. Type the title as Answer Key of quiz, exam, etc., and click OK
5. Select the correct answer according to the question type
6. Repeat the process until you finish all questions
Use Previous or Next button when you correct a mistake
7. Click OK
(At the classroom)

d. When you click Next (#) button on the Engage Bar and then the large question box window blocks
PowerPoint slide, click Options button and remove the checkmark from Show Large Screen from Options.
e. When you occasionally would like to show histogram after question, use histogram button on the Engage Bar
and remove the checkmark „Show Answer Distribution‟(PC) „Auto Show Histogram‟(Mac) after clicking
Options button.
Lesson Plan 3: Using CPS for on-the-spot questions
(At the classroom)
1. Move your folder including CPS database file to the classroom computer if you do not use your laptop. If
you use your own laptop, connect the receiver to USB and log in the network.
2. Double click the folder to open
3. Double click your database file (.cps)
When your database is open, it is a good idea to check the option setting and condition of the receiver in advance.

29. Histogram appears automatically and select the correct answer if it is appropriate
30. Click Close on the histogram window
You can move to the second question by clicking the question type and repeat the process. When you finish, click
CLOSE button.
(Trouble shooting)
f. When you click Verbal Question on the Engage Bar and then you cannot see the large question box window
to type the question, click Options button and remove the checkmark from Show Large Screen from Verbal
Questions.
Lesson Plan 4: Using CPS with prepared questions (Creating questions directly in your CPS database)
If you prepare the question in CPS, not only you can record the correct answers of all questions, but also
students can view both questions and their answers in eInstruction site after class.
(Preparation before class)
You have to create a quiz in CPS.
1. Select your database file (.cps) on the left pane under Lesson tab
2. Click Tools
3. Select New Lesson
4. Type the title of lesson. You may type the description of lesson if necessary.
5. Click OK
6. Select the lesson to which you would like to add questions
7. Click Tools and select New and then Question for PC users. Click (? New) under Questions for Mac users.
8. Select question type from Template and Difficulty Level if desired
9. Type question and responses, if appropriate
10. Click the icon for “Save and Move to Next Question” (floppy disk with right-pointing triangle)
11. Repeat this process (steps 8 – 10) until you finish all questions, then select CLOSE from the Question menu.

When you need to modify (or remove) a question, select the question in the right pane under Lessons tab,
click Tools, and then select Edit (or Delete) for PC users. Click Edit (or Delete) under Questions for Mac
users.

To save the folder to Flash Drive (Important!)
1. Connect your flash drive to the computer if you are not using your own computer
2. Move the CPS folder on Desktop to your flash drive
3. Delete the CPS folder from Desktop
To view the attendance and grades (for PC users only)
After you open your database,
1. Click Gradebook tab
2. Make sure the date to view from the option on the bottom of Gradebook
3. Click All button on the top of the left pane
To view detailed student response for attendance, quiz, etc.
After you open your database,
1. Click Reports tab
2. Select the session such as Quiz, Review, etc.
3. Click Generate for PC users, Report for Mac users
4. Select All students by clicking the box below
5. Select report type such as Instructor Summary
6. Click Preview button
(For PC users) You can print out the report by clicking Printer icon the top or save it as various file formats if
you click Output button on the left and select the file type.
(For Mac users) You can print out the report by clicking Print button on the top. CPS database for Mac does
not generate the grade book automatically like the one for PC. If you need the grade book, click Export
button, select MS Excel Spreadsheet, and save it on the desktop of your computer.
To modify the session after class
In class if you have found wrong alternative was selected as a correct answer or multiple correct answers in a
question, you can correct the error after class.
1. Click Reports tab
2. Select the session you would like to modify
3. Click Edit on the top and then Re-grade Questions for PC users, Re-grade for Mac users
4. Click OK after you finish (Student grades will be adjusted automatically)
5. Click Upload on the top (It is good idea to post adjusted grades for students)
To upload the session to eInstruction’s server
If you upload the session to eInstruction‟s server, students can check their response and correct answer by logging in
the server. When you start the quiz in class, we recommend you select one of options: „Automatically Upload
Session upon completion.‟ Sometimes you may miss the option or you may use CPS in class without network
connection. Still you can upload the session after class. Before you start, please make sure your computer is
connected to the network.
1. Click Reports tab
2. Select the session you would like to upload
3. Click Upload on the top
To check the grade you uploaded to CPS server (Option)
1. Go to http://www.einstruction.com
2. Click Login on the top menu bar
3. Click Higher Ed Instructors
4. Select University of Kansas from the pull-down menu and click Choose Site
5. Type Username and Password
6. Click Login
7. Select the class from the pull-down menu and click SELECT CLASS
8. Select CPS connection on the left
9. Click View to check the grade
