BEFORE STARTING ENGINE: Altimeter -- SET to setting given by ATC
Preflight inspection -- COMPLETE Annunciator Panel -- TEST
Seats, Seat Belts, and Shoulder Harnesses -- ADJUST and LOCK GPS – Confirm self-test and altimeter setting
Brakes – TEST Transponder – TEST, then STANDBY
Circuit Breakers -- CHECK IN Autopilot – enter altimeter setting
Electrical Equipment -- OFF Taxiing – CHECK brakes immediately after airplane begins moving
Avionics Master Switch – OFF
Autopilot -- OFF DURING TURNS WHILE TAXIING:
Cowl Flaps – OPEN Turn Coordinator -- Indicates skidding turn in proper direction
Fuel Selector Valve – BOTH Heading Indicator -- Turns in proper direction
Avionics Circuit Breakers -- CHECK IN Magnetic Compass -- Turns in proper direction, bowl full of fluid
STARTING ENGINE: BEFORE TAKEOFF:
Throttle – OPEN ¼” Passenger Seat Backs – MOST UPRIGHT POSITION
Propeller – HIGH RPM Seats & Seat Belts – CHECK SECURE
Mixture -- IDLE CUT-OFF Cabin Doors -- CLOSED and LATCHED
Propeller Area -- CLEAR Flight controls -- FREE and CORRECT
Master Switch – ON Fuel Quantity -- CHECK
Flashing Beacon – ON Fuel Selector Valve -- RECHECK BOTH
Auxiliary Fuel Pump -- ON Mixture – FULL RICH
Mixture – ADVANCE until fuel flow just starts to rise, then return to Throttle -- 1800 RPM:
IDLE CUT-OFF position Magnetos -- CHECK (max drop 150 RPM, max diff. 50 RPM)
Auxiliary Fuel Pump – OFF Propeller – CYCLE from high to low to high RPM
Ignition Switch -- START (release when engine starts) Vacuum -- Normal operating range
Mixture – Advance smoothly to RICH when engine fires Ammeter -- CHECK
Throttle – 1000 RPM Engine Instruments -- CHECK
Oil pressure -- CHECK Annunciator Panel – No warnings illuminated
Mixture – LEAN one inch for taxi Throttle – CHECK IDLE
Flaps – UP Throttle -- 1000 RPM
Navigation, Cockpit, and Taxi Lights -- ON as required Throttle Friction Lock -- ADJUST
Avionics Master Switch – ON Flight instruments – SET:
Communication Radios: DVT SDL FFZ Attitude Indicator – Check, Set for level flight
ATIS 126.5 118.6 118.25 Vertical Speed Indicator -- Note indication of 0 fpm climb
Ground 121.8 121.6 121.3 Altimeter – Should read within 75’ of field elevation
Tower S: 118.4 119.9 124.6 Airspeed Indicator – indicates 0
N: 120.2 Pitot heat -- CHECK
Practice area 122.75 (north) 122.85 (south) Elevator & Rudder Trim – SET for TAKEOFF
Communication Radio – Tower or CTAF Mixture – RICH
Navigation Radios -- SET if flying cross-country Propeller – HIGH RPM
NAV/GPS HIS Switch -- SET Strobe and Landing Lights -- ON
Autopilot -- OFF Autopilot -- OFF
Strobe and Landing Lights -- ON
Windows -- CLOSED NORMAL LANDING:
Parking Brake – OFF Airspeed – 70-80 KIAS (flaps UP)
Transponder – ALT Flaps – 0-10 < 140 KIAS, 10-20 < 120 KIAS, FULL < 100 KIAS
Airspeed -- 60-70 KIAS (flaps DOWN)
NORMAL TAKEOFF:
Flaps – 0 SHORT OR SOFT FIELD LANDING:
Throttle -- FULL OPEN Flaps – FULL DOWN (below 100 KIAS)
Airspeed Indicator – Indicates increasing speed Airspeed -- 60 KIAS
Elevator Control -- Rotate at 60 KIAS
BALKED LANDING:
SHORT FIELD TAKEOFF: Throttle -- FULL OPEN
Flaps -- 20 Flaps -- RETRACT TO 20 (immediately)
Brakes -- HOLD Airspeed -- 55 KIAS (until obstacles are cleared)
Throttle -- FULL OPEN Flaps -- RETRACT (after reaching a safe altitude and 70 KIAS)
Brakes -- RELEASE Cowl Flaps – OPEN
Climb Speed -- 58 KIAS until obstacles cleared, then as appropriate
Flaps -- RETRACT after reaching 70 KIAS AFTER LANDING:
Flaps -- RETRACT
NORMAL CLIMB: Cowl Flaps – OPEN
Airspeed -- 85-95 KIAS Transponder -- STANDBY
Power -- 23” or FULL THROTTLE (whichever is less)
RPM – REDUCE to 2400 RPM SHUTDOWN:
Mixture – 15 GPH or FULL RICH (whichever is less) Call for fuel on 130.65 @ DVT
Avionics Master Switch -- OFF
CRUISE: Electrical Equipment -- OFF (except flashing beacon)
Power – 15-23”, 2000-2400 RPM (no more than 80% is recommended) Throttle -- IDLE
Elevator Trim -- ADJUST Mixture -- IDLE CUT-OFF
Mixture -- lean to peak EGT minus 125 F. Ignition Switch -- OFF (after propeller stops turning)
Cowl Flaps – CLOSED Flashing Beacon -- OFF
Master Switch -- OFF
BEFORE LANDING: Control Lock -- INSTALL
Passenger Seat Backs – MOST UPRIGHT POSITION Vents -- CLOSED
Seats & Seat Belts –SECURED & LOCKED Tiedowns -- SECURED
Fuel Selector Valve -- BOTH Flight Plan -- CLOSED
