NTA Releases Fiscal Year 2009 Objectives Report to Congress National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson delivered a report to Congress that identifies the priority issues the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate will address in the coming fiscal year. Key areas of focus include improving IRS procedures to protect victims of taxrelated identity theft, and expanding outreach and education concerning the †œcancellation of debt†• tax consequences for individuals who have lost their homes to foreclosure. About the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) Mission statement: As an independent organization within the IRS, we help taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommend changes that will prevent the problems.
There is at least one local taxpayer advocate (LTA) in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico
As the leader of the TAS organization, the National Taxpayer Advocate is required by law to deliver two reports to Congress each year. As part of the larger TAS organization, the Office of Systemic Advocacy addresses broad issues that impact groups of taxpayers, including both individuals and businesses.
