MBA Program international business innovation and technology management MBA in International Business The recently introduced study abroad program as an integral part of the International Business MBA curriculum has enormous value for shaping knowledge and providing insight into operating in distant markets. Through sharing living, working and studying space with American, Asian or European consumers, future business managers will get the needed education to compete globally. The Chief of my service at FAO has an MBA in International Business, so I am certain that it will continue to be the cornerstone of the MBA at UNB Saint John. Dr. Neil Ridler, PhD, Economist, UNB Saint John Consultant and Visiting Scientist Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Dr. Ridler was most recently on Mission to Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. He also works with the Policy and Planning Division in the Fisheries Department with a focus on policy aspects of aquaculture. MBA in Innovation and Technology Management We are becoming increasingly familiar with this new, but already established, term, “the global economy”. The global economy has dramatically changed our everyday lives and the “rules of the game” at work. For the business world, change to the global economy is a MUST, and is very much about survival. As business people, we all face the same dilemma. We must choose to either: • Do business as usual or learn the new paradigms where the rules are dictated by the unforgiving forces of globalization and pervasive information technology. • Become one of the 80% of new businesses that fail after one year or stand out by mastering integration of the Internet and other communication technologies with adequate business strategies. • Contemplate achievements of others or learn and practice new theories and practices that enhance the competitiveness of our business, create work opportunities for ourselves, and improve the quality of life around us. Ultimately, we must choose to enjoy our lives and benefit from what the global economy has to offer. Gerry Pond, CEO Mariner Partners Inc. As Chairman and CEO of Mariner Partners, Inc., Gerry brings over 35 years of in-depth experience in the information and communications technology industry. Having been the President of Aliant Telecom and CEO of NBTel during a period of significant deregulation in the Canadian industry, Gerry continues to demonstrate his ability to successfully restructure companies while delivering revenue growth and strong operating results. global innovation The Faculty of Business at the University of New Brunswick Saint John offers a twelve-month MBA program focused on developing innovative and entrepreneurial leaders who are equipped to manage in the global market place. Dr. Shelley M. Rinehart, PhD Dean, Faculty of Business continuity and change We have reinvented the UNBSJ MBA Program. We have listened to our students and alumni, we have listened to business leaders, and we have changed to meet their needs, to be their MBA of choice. Capitalizing on earlier achievements and new resources, we have developed the program with two valuable streams. Consequently, UNB Saint John MBA students can specialize in International Business or Innovation and Technology Management. The business world is increasingly interconnected, but this network is not spread equally around the globe. It is concentrated on the continents of North America, Europe and Asia. In this new program, our students will master these business environments because success in these markets determines the competitiveness of any business today. Similarly, our students will embrace the entrepreneurial movement, creating technologically advanced businesses exploiting information and communication technologies as these advances will determine business growth in the future. As many as thirty part-time students are drawn from the ranks of local industry. The result is a course of instruction that counts diversity of experience of participants as one of its richest resources. Coursework often places you in teams whose members must rely on individual contribution for success. The challenge lies in harnessing the power of this diversity, and the outcome can be life changing. Challenges inside and outside the classroom encourage the quiet to be outspoken, the aggressive to be encouraging, the vocal to listen. Together, students learn to exploit their team strengths and develop the skills that might work against them if they do not. After eight years I do still remember the graduation day; a great feeling of accomplishment. Pride in what has been achieved and the people with whom I had the chance to work. It took me back to those days when I had been an undergraduate student in Minsk, young and full of energy. Coming back to work after my MBA, I did not really think that I would be able to use everything I had learned. Surprisingly, I did and I still do now. It was not a single subject or a single instructor who inspired us – a group of students. It was an entire process designed in a way that you learn something from each course, each teacher, and each colleague; and it eventually helps you to change yourself to better deal with others and set up clear priorities for your professional and personal life. Dimitry Ditchkovsky, MBA 1998, CEO Milavitsa Company, Minsk, Belarus www.milavitsa.com Employment Statistics An MBA is an investment in the future, one of the most valuable tools in our graduates’ career kits. For the past two decades, China has been growing at an astounding 9.5% a year, and India by 6%. Given their young populations, high savings, and the sheer amount of catching up they still have to do, most economists figure China and India possess the fundamentals to keep growing in the 7%-to-8% range for decades… Barring cataclysm, within three decades India should have vaulted over Germany as the world’s third-biggest economy. By mid-century, China should have overtaken the U.S. as No. 1. By then, China and India could account for half of global output. From “A New World Economy” www.businessweek.com. The UNB Saint John MBA partners with learning institutions in China, France and India to ensure firsthand exposure to world trading blocks. Seize a world of business opportunity! Students in the International Business Stream may undertake European studies in France, or Asian studies in India or China. If you choose NAFTA as a stream of study, you will stay at UNB Saint John. The international experience is taken out of the textbook and the case manual and is lived every day by our IB students. You will learn about business in Asia, Europe and North America while living in the marketplace. This unique opportunity is made available at little or no additional cost to you. Fees for education abroad are paid through student tuition at UNB Saint John, and a travel allowance is provided as well. You will only be required to cover your living expenses, as you would if you were taking courses on the UNB Saint John campus. IB students opt for two of the three regions. Our partner institutions are the Burgundy School of Business in France, the Birla Institute of Technology in India and Shanghai University in China. You begin to specialize in your chosen academic stream in Module Three. In January 1994, Canada, the United States and Mexico launched the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and formed the world's largest free trade area. NAFTA and other trading blocks are an essential facet of the global trading system. The whole point of such trading blocks is to gain access to larger markets without having to face “unfair” competition from countries that may engage in business or economic practices that are at odds with those of the domestic economy. Anyone wishing to trade with another country, specifically one outside their own trading block must have a strong understanding of local business practice and the specific trading agreements that country already has with other countries. Dr. Jason Childs, PhD, Economist, UNB Saint John 8 § § § § § § § § § § MODULE Three (9 weeks, Spring) • • • SME Entrepreneurship & New Venture Management Information Systems, plus IB STREAM students take: x International Trade Management x International Financial Management x Transnational Management Business in the European Union Recently enlarged to 25 Member States, the EU is the 2nd major world economy after the United States, a key market for international companies with 450 million consumers and an active player on the global stage: of the world’s 100 largest companies, 32 are from the EU, as are 39 of the world’s 100 largest commercial banks. Moreover, the EU is the #1 economic partner of the United States and ranks 2nd for Canada, only after the US. However, unlike the United States or Canada, the European Union is not a single consistent entity but a set of 25 countries with different populations, economic or social structures as well as historical and cultural backgrounds, all committed to further economic integration by delegating some of their sovereignty to a set of supranational institutions. Understanding the functioning of European institutions, national differences among EU Member States and how the European integration process impacts national identities is crucial to successful business in and with the European Union. In that respect, understanding Europe provides students with a unique exposure/experience to business in an environment that can then be transferred to other regions of the world. Sample Course Description MBA 7407 International Finance and Trade in NAFTA Environment The business world is clustered by a variety of trade agreements. A focus on NAFTA serves as a forum for analysis of the impact that this trade agreement has on business transactions. The purpose of MBA 7407 is to explain how analysis of economic policy in finance and trade shaped by NAFTA can help us to understand the economic opportunities and challenges business faces dealing within this trade association, as well as between NAFTA and other trade agreements. After taking the course, students should understand the risks associated with maintaining cross-border capital flows to finance international trade. Please note that the most current information on our program and course offerings is available on our website: www.unbsj.ca/mba MODULE Five (10 weeks, Fall) IB Stream students choose to study either the NAFTA Trade Region at UNB Saint John or the European Union in France. Courses offered in each trading region will concentrate on the following five areas: • Business Environment • Comparative International Marketing • International Finance and Trade • Comparative Consumer Behaviour • Comparative Human Resources Management 9 innovation and technology management (ITM) Innovation and Technology Management (ITM) is a recognized business discipline and body of knowledge about how to compete on the basis of science, technology, and knowledge. Graduate business education in innovation and technology management is about bringing together business and technology to produce innovation (the process of creating and bringing to market new products or services). The advantage of graduate business education in ITM is that it provides a strong foundation for creating value from new technology and technological change. Firms that choose to compete based on innovation need business people who can manage and lead the innovation process within the firm. § § § § § § § § § § MODULE Three (9 weeks, Spring) • • SME Entrepreneurship & New Venture Management Information Systems, plus ITM STREAM students take: x Management of Innovations x Commercialization of New Products & Services x Strategic Management of Technology and Innovations Start a business! The course goes beyond the initial development of a business and focuses on implementation of business start-ups. How do you actually put your business plan into action to launch a firm? MBA 7353 Current Topics in Technology Management MBA 7353 examines current practices and issues in the strategic management of technology. Various models of managing the technology function within a broad organizational context will be examined in seminar format in the class as well as in the field. To provide for the most updated approach to technology management, leaders from industry and government will be invited to the class, and current regulatory and practical issues discussed. Anu Gupta,Telecommunications and Information Technology B.Eng (Queen’s), MBA (Moncton) Prof. Gupta is the founder of Eclipse Innovations, a premier IT Training Company. He has been teaching at UNB Saint John since 1998 in the areas of IT, IS, Telecommunications, and e-business. Currently with Aliant as the Manager of Technical Solutions, he develops Managed Networks based solutions for enterprise customers. Being one of Canada’s first e-business MBA programs, the UNB Saint John MBA has developed a strong foundation in technology management. I have taught in the program for over five years and believe there are several distinct advantages to the UNBSJ MBA program. First, as the IT industry changes at a rapid pace the program stays current by leveraging its strong ties to the business community. For instance, the program utilizes industry professionals to provide a ‘real world’ environment. Secondly, the students significantly benefit from the high level of interaction between the program and the business community through internships, career development and mentorship. Finally, I have seen the program attract top IT talent. The caliber of students has raised the knowledge level of the entire class. Please note that the most current information on our program and course offerings is available on our website: www.unbsj.ca/mba 11 special features Students come to UNB Saint John for their MBA because of our strong background in offering international business and technology management education. UNB Saint John’s Faculty of Business and its MBA team have built a network of private sector and research relationships upon which we draw to broaden your network of contacts in business and industry. In addition to the MBA Faculty, classes are led by visiting scholars and members of the private sector. Full-time students undertake coursework with local business people as fellow students completing MBAs part time. Workshops, seminars, a mentorship program, panel discussions and corporate tours take place throughout the year to introduce you to leaders in industries that include manufacturing, communications and information technology, food processing and service. Dinners and mixers are arranged to allow you and local business leaders to meet one another, share ideas and celebrate one another’s achievements. With a 2:1 student to professor ratio, your professors will always remember your name. § § § § § § § § § § Why the UNB Saint John MBA is best for YOU Critical to the success of graduates is a program of individual development that takes place alongside foundation courses. You will engage in workshops and mentoring that require you to develop the acute sense of self-awareness demanded of entrepreneurs in international and start-up settings. You will learn not only to make decisions but also to consider how your behaviour influences your success. Full-time MBA students have the advantage of an ongoing professional development program designed to enhance your ability to work both as individuals and within a team environment by developing strong computer, writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills. A full-time professional development consultant works closely with you to maximize your personal effectiveness within an organization. The program also develops goal setting, project management, and job readiness skills. The Program begins with an Orientation that helps you assess your strengths, to be aware of the soundness of the match between your values, beliefs and behaviours, and your career goals. The week also focuses on helping you build the necessary skills to be successful in the MBA classroom including team building and leadership development. For those of you who have not been in the classroom for a while, do not worry – we will give you a refresher on economics, statistics and accounting. Subsequent workshops and mentoring are more tailored to your individual needs and involve learning how to use personal strengths to meet challenges within the Program and in the workplace. Career Training Week is an annual weeklong professional development initiative focused on communication, networking, career planning, personal marketing and job search as well as evaluation skill sets. Full-time students and industry experts are brought together to engage in informal intimate discussions 12 about current and future situations in their business fields. All of this provides not only insight into business and industry but provides valuable connections with the business community, while allowing you to tackle issues such as effective management practices, and examination of issues from economic, historical, legal and cultural perspectives. Training week emphasizes the development of a competitive advantage for a successful re-entry into the business world. Integrated Learning Experiences step outside the traditional classroom setting to help you address critical management issues and develop vital managerial skills. This skill development centres on the preparation of a business plan within your area of specialization. Students are supported by workshops that focus on presentation skills, writing, and business plan development. One of the UNB Saint John MBA’s most powerful tools is a Mentorship Program in which senior executives are matched with students from the program. This program provides you with that much-needed personal one-on-one link with the business community. Mentors are drawn from the ranks of Vice Presidents, CEOs and mid-level managers and meet for a minimum of three hours per month with you providing advice on your job hunt, taking you to corporate meetings and community business functions, or meeting for coffee at the Saint John City Market or a beverage at The Saint John Ale House, two of Saint John’s most famous impromptu networking venues. Functions are formally arranged with mentors during the year, but students are graciously encouraged by their mentors to contact them informally to talk about career paths, expectations and experiences. Mentors have even invited students home for meals to meet their families, or even to spend the weekend at their cottage. It has been a powerful experience for me personally to begin to understand the tremendous value opportunity the international students afford Saint John in building and broadening our cultural experience. From a professional perspective this program has shown first hand the caliber of the MBA graduates, their competencies, commitment and value systems. This program offers a business leader a very different understanding of the cultural aspects of business integration; that of the international MBA‘s perspective. During the first week, he demonstrated a very strong academic knowledge of the marketing discipline, but more important was his ability to translate that knowledge into real marketing issues and challenges that faced our company. Jesse was able to have an immediate positive impact within our team. We initially extended his term by 4 weeks, however turned that extension into a full time position as a Marketing Specialist. Rick MacPhee, VP Marketing Anyware Group Part-time Study As with the General Management option, part-time students may compose a program that suits their career needs. Both the IB and ITM stream are open to part-time students. In the ITM stream, the Incubator experience will be replaced by a project or credit may be given for ITM related work experience. This MBA program has given me a great experience in terms of both academic study and a real work term. Deep communication with professors, influential guest speakers, a diversified cultural atmosphere, and professional development training has prepared me quite well for global competition. Terry Conrod, Director of Strategic Investments and Planning, Innovatia In addition to giving me an opportunity to work in a Canadian company for a 10-week internship, in this program I improved my business analysis, research and learning skills. I have done many case studies, along with participating in class discussions, presentations, group work, and simulations that have all helped me build a new concept of business management. Although I had several years of management experience when I entered the program, this MBA has provided me with a solid foundation knowledge of management in all areas. As well, we received professional development training from the first day. Now, in addition to developing my team and leadership skills, I know how to write a good resume and do well in interview.
