The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) is the government body
that is responsible for raising the skills levels in England.
Government funding is available to help employees gain
their first full level two qualification and Skills for Life
first numeracy and literacy qualification.
The LSC’s initiative, Train to Gain is designed to help
businesses of all sizes get the maximum level of training
support for their staff.
The initiative aims to address the skills shortages that affect
industries today.

Funding
There are two funding streams available, determined by employee eligibility.
These are fully funded and partially funded support.
• Fully Funded
Funding is available from the Train to Gain service for employees who do not currently hold the qualifications outlined
on page 5 and who are undertaking their first NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 qualification (aged 19-25 yrs). This means that as an
employer you will not have to pay for the training undertaken. In some cases as an employer you may also be eligible
for wage compensation whilst the employee is at College and away from your workplace.
• Partially Funded
Partial funding is available for employees who already hold a Level 2 qualification or equivalent as outlined on page 5
and who are undertaking a NVQ Level 2 or progressing on to a NVQ Level 3 programme, or who are aged over
25 yrs and progressing on to a NVQ Level 3. This means that as an employer you will be required to pay a contribution
towards training.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ)
The qualification is competence based and links the employee’s ability to perform a range of tasks connected to their work.
The employee working with an assessor will plan a programme of – and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove their level
of knowledge and competence. The qualification on average takes between six and nine months to complete.
Skills Advisors
A Skills Advisor from the College will provide a one-to-one dedicated service which will support your business training needs.
They will identify the skills shortages in your business and will create a tailored package of training and support. They will also
find funding to assist the training when appropriate and will evaluate the effectiveness of the training undertaken. The Skills
Advisor will visit you in your workplace at a time and place to suit you and will maintain regular contact with you to ensure
that your training requirements are met. The services of the Skills Advisor and the training needs analysis undertaken is
provided free of charge.
Our commitment to you:
South Devon College can offer National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) with:
• work based assessment leading to a recognised qualification
• option of 15 hours of complementary training
• an impact assessment of the training delivered
The following support is available to the employee/candidate:
• an assessor who is contactable throughout the duration of the course.
• access to outstanding facilities at the Newton Abbot and Vantage Point sites including the learning resources centre,
state of the art IT provision and medical and welfare support from the College counsellor and nurse.

Free help and support is available for employees who need to improve their mathematics, reading or writing skills.
Improving numeracy and literacy skills can help increase an employee’s salary, enhance career development and increase
self confidence.
Areas that are covered include problem solving skills, working effectively in teams, identifying strategies for improving
learning and performance, communication, numbers and IT skills. Communication skills of listening, reading and writing
are developed so that the employee can give and follow instructions more effectively, improve use of grammar,
punctuation and spelling and gain a better understanding of written material. An ability to work more effectively with
