MBA International Experience Endowment Campaign
The Kelley School of Business Indianapolis (KSBI) International Experience
Since 1998, the Kelley School of Business has offered its Indianapolis MBA students a unique
elective study option in international business. Known as “China in Transition,” it is a truly
unique, hands-on learning experience unparalleled among part-time or full-time MBA programs.
This course takes Kelley students beyond the classroom and into the realm of international
business.
Together with students from a Chinese university, Kelley MBAs conduct a live business
consulting project for a state-owned enterprise in China. The project begins with extensive
study of the client’s industry and the issues it faces. Training in Chinese culture and business
practices prepares the students for the second part of the course, a rigorous 10- to 14-day on-
site study. Culminating in a bilingual presentation to the client, this study immerses Kelley
MBAs in the issues facing businesses of all types as China transitions from a command to a
market economy. The China trip also includes a visit to the Chinese offices of Indiana-based
global businesses and the U. S. Commerce Department mission. The program concludes with
the delivery of a comprehensive project report to the consulting client.
China in Transition is unique among top U. S. business schools in that it combines a real
consulting project with immersive study in a foreign country. Students who participate in this
program gain valuable experience in the conduct of business outside of the United States and
extensive knowledge of the issues faced by firms operating in emerging economies.
The China in Transition program is the template that KSBI will use to build other international
outreach initiatives potentially in areas such as India, South and Central America, and Russia.
This format not only benefits the students and faculty of Kelley, but serves as a valuable asset
for the state of Indiana and local companies as they look toward international partnerships and
emerging markets to help foster Hoosier economic growth.
Kelley Indianapolis MBA Students
The evening MBA program of the KSBI attracts mainly young professionals who are employed
full-time. These students pursue graduate business education at a nationally ranked institution
while continuing their careers. Predominantly, Kelley Indianapolis MBAs remain in Indiana after
graduation, which means their educational experiences continue to serve the local community.
Those who participate in China in Transition make commitments to their education beyond the
standard curriculum—personally, professionally, and monetarily. In addition to course tuition,
students spend about $5,000 each for airfare, lodging, and other expenses. Most students
must also exhaust their vacation time and sacrifice time away from family for the duration of
the consulting trip. This level of dedication, not often found among graduate students, defines
Kelley Indianapolis MBAs.
KSBI International Endowment Campaign and Funding Plan
The goal of this fundraising effort is twofold: to increase participation by offsetting some of the
expenses that must be borne by the students; and to provide financial security to ensure the
perpetuity of the program. The fundraising plan is to secure an endowed gift of $1,000,000 so
that annually $50,000 is available to help open the door for more student participation and
expand the international experience into other emerging markets around the world. With a gift
of this magnitude, an individual or corporation makes an investment in global business
education that will yield benefits today and well into the future.
