Katz Graduate School of Business interns include a low-risk, high return look at prospective employees. Interns will give you a valuable pool of potential employees who understand your business, with considerable savings on training and assessing cultural fit. Katz interns are available for full-time internships from mid-April to late-August, and many students also choose to work as interns part-time during the school year. Internships are a key component of the two-year Katz experience. Students develop their skill sets throughout their time at Katz, and then put them into action during summer internships and during year-round work on special projects. The faculty and administrative staff at Katz work to ensure that our students are ready to “hit the ground running” when they begin working with your company. That is also why CompetencyBased Coaching is a key component of the two-year MBA program at Katz. The goal of the Competency-Based Coaching Program is to assist students in developing the attributes which are most highly valued by employers and correlated with career success. To accomplish this, Katz has expanded the MBA experience to include an innovative, individually targeted, comprehensive program with the following five components: • • Individual Assessment Feedback, Professional Development Planning and Follow-Up Professional Development Program Position Coaching Leadership Development • • • The Director of the CompetencyBased Coaching Program remains in contact with students on a regular basis to provide feedback and professional development planning throughout their time at Katz, and during their internship experiences. By participating in pre-recruiting activities, your organization can build a strong presence on campus and gain a competitive advantage. These activities help build student interest in your company and give you the opportunity to interact with students you may want to interview. Mock Interview Day Mock Interview Day is one of the most useful and well attended events on campus! Students get the one-on-one opportunity to practice their interviewing skills with actual recruiters and hiring executives from the business community. Participating recruiters have the opportunity to get in front of MBA talent and promote their companies before on campus recruiting officially begins. After the mock interview, students are provided with valuable feedback from their interviewers about what their strengths are and how they can improve their interviewing ability. This feedback is just one of many professional development components that Career Services utilizes to help build stronger, more effective candidates for your future employment opportunities. Corporate Presentations We recommend holding these informational sessions at least four weeks before you plan on interviewing candidates. This provides you an opportunity to promote your company and the positions available before students submit resumes. These presentations are open to all students registered with Career Services. Sharing the Real World with Katz Students Graduate students arrive at Katz with some pretty clear-cut goals and ambitions. They often know the kind of job and industry in which they’d like to work after completing the MBA. Our goal is to round out the students’ understanding of the nature and challenges of their chosen profession by inviting employers to showcase real job opportunities and career paths in their organizations. For example, employers participate in: • ‘So You Wanna Be…’ Students learn what it really means to be a Brand Manager (or Financial Analyst, Consultant, Market Researcher, etc.) through discussions with people actually doing that job. They learn what the job entails, key priorities and challenges and what it takes to be successful. marily focused on those companies recruiting to hire candidates for full-time opportunities. The Spring Career Fair is primarily focused on those companies recruiting to hire candidates for summer internship opportunities. Complete details, including on-line registration information, an agenda, a list of suggested accommodations, directions and parking information, and shipping instructions can be found at: www.careers.pitt.edu. • Managing Your Career in Business In this one credit course, students learn job search skills and how to communicate their capabilities clearly and convincingly. Employers participate as guest speakers and have the opportunity to meet some of our top students seeking both internship and full-time positions. We operate on the belief that both students and employers benefit by developing relationships early and communicating openly about job opportunities. We welcome the expertise and experience that our employers offer and invite you to participate in a lunchtime forum, classroom discussion or other venue. Case Competitions Could your company use a fresh perspective on a problem? If so, sponsoring a Katz Case Competition with a student organization may be the solution. Katz Case Competitions are two day events where Katz students team up to solve a specific problem for your company. The first day, teams of two to five students will read the case, research, and come up with their proposals. On the second day of the competition, representatives from your organization come to Katz to judge the teams’ presentations and select a winner. The participation level in these competitions is very high as Katz students relish the opportunity to gain this practical experience and compete for the prestige of winning the competition. University of Pittsburgh Fall and Spring Career Fairs The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business’ Career Services Office and The University of Pittsburgh’s main Career Services Office have combined our efforts to provide an opportunity for you to meet both graduate and undergraduate talent in one visit to the University. Whether you use career fairs as a preliminary pre-recruitment activity or as your primary sourcing tool, you will likely find an event that suits your needs. Our career fairs are designed to provide you with an opportunity to effectively market your company on campus, identify interested candidates and establish excellent relationships with students. Scheduled career fairs are held in the Fall and in the Spring of each academic year. The Fall Career Fair is pri- Fellowships Financial aid is offered to some of the top students who apply to the Katz School in the form of fellowships. Our fellowships are branded with our corporate partners. This adds prestige to the fellowship and aids in connecting the top talent we attract to the corporate partners with which we are proud to associate. Representatives from our corporate partners review applicants and choose an individual student who best exemplifies the type of people that typify their firm’s best. Through this branded fellowship, corporations offer the prospective student a fellowship opportunity that may also include a summer internship (if this student is in either the two-year MBA program or a two-year dual degree program). Past and present Fellowship partners include Standard & Poors, DelMonte, GlaxoSmithKline, Ford Motor Company, and National City. Ultimately, the goal of the Katz/ Corporate Fellows program is to connect the best and brightest and attain long-term relations for long-term employment. Best Practice Partners The Best Practice Partners program is an alliance between the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and those companies that exemplify Best Practices in the school’s MBA course areas. A different Best Practice company is selected as a partner for each Katz core course and elective and works with the Katz academic faculty in developing Best Practice examples of the theories and concepts being taught. The goal of the program is to integrate business theory and concepts with practical applications and to honor companies that demonstrate excellence. Companies benefit through the ability to influence MBA curriculum and gain a head start in discovering and recruiting top MBA talent. Student Clubs and Organizations The Katz School has a variety of student-run clubs and organizations, many of which regularly host speakers and events. These clubs include: • Marketing Club • APICS • Finance Club • MIS Club • National Association of Women MBAs • Toastmasters • Operations Club • Entrepreneurship Club For information on how to connect with these organizations, contact the Career Services Center. 0 Founded in Choosing Recruiting Options We strive to develop specialized recruiting options to fit each employer. There are many things to consider when deciding on the right option for you. What type of hire are you looking for? Full-time hire? Summer Intern? Intern during the school year? FACT 1787, the University of Pittsburgh is the 15th oldest university in the United States. Its business program, which began in 1907 and renamed the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business in 1987, is one of the earliest in the nation. any alternates. We will then take care of scheduling the students for your selected interview date. Job Postings Is this a “just-in-time” position, or is this part of your more “formal” recruiting process? How soon do you need to fill this position? All of these things factor into choosing your recruiting options at Katz. For both full-time and internship hires, we offer on-campus recruiting/interviews as well as an online job board where students can view and apply to the position directly, allowing you to interview them at your convenience. You can also simply browse our resume directory for candidates that are of interest to you. Can’t make it to campus? Not to worry…you can still post jobs and receive applications in the same way. You can either post the position yourself on our system (see Online Recruiting System and Resume Directory on page 12), or you can email the job to your CSC contact or our Recruiting Manager, Charmaine Evans, at caevans@katz.pitt.edu. Please provide the following information when submitting a job or internship to be posted: • • • • • • Position title Location of position Job description Job requirements Work authorization requirements Deadline to receive applications Resume Directory If you do not have a formal job description to post, you can still get a look at qualified candidates through our Online Resume Directory. This allows you to search resumes by multiple criteria. Once you find them, you may contact the candidates directly or ask our office to arrange either a face-to-face interview or a phone interview. On-Campus Interviews On-campus interviews allow employers to interview a number of students in a relatively short amount of time. They also require minimal effort on the part of the employer, as our office will handle all of the details from scheduling all of the students to your parking and lunch. In order to set up your on-campus interview, we just need you to provide the following: • • • • Date on which you wish to interview Job Description Length of interview (30, 45 or 60 minutes) Any special requests With this information, we will post the position for students to view. Interested candidates will submit their applications through our office, and we will then forward them to you all in one email on the application deadline. You then review the applicants and let us know which candidates you wish to interview, and if there are MBA Online Recruiting System and Resume Directory For your convenience, all of our recruiting is done on-line through our database called EASE. Katz Graduate School of Business has long recognized that MBAs from outside the United States offer unique skill sets that make them an asset to U.S. employers and multinational corporations worldwide. Their multilingual skills, multicultural outlook, awareness of other countries’ business practices, and ability to access a worldwide network of alumni and peers will prove invaluable to your company. In addition, the stamina, persistence, and work-ethic international students demonstrate by successfully completing an MBA in the United States offer employers confidence that these “newly minted” MBAs can perform in the rigorous reality of today’s marketplace. That’s why we created KATZPORT, an innovative program which allows employers to hire international talent without the hassle of the paperwork normally associated with hiring international candidates. The Katz School has contracted with a nationally renowned immigration law firm to handle this paperwork for companies hiring international Katz graduates. From a practical standpoint, many employers may not realize the ease with which they can employ an international student for an internship or career position. Most Katz students hold the F-1 (foreign student) visa. For the F-1 visa, employers are permitted to hire students who have completed their MBA program under Optional Practical Training (OPT). Also, employers can hire students for internships while they are still enrolled in the MBA program under Curricular Practical Training (CPT). These options allow international candidates to work without additional paperwork from the employer. panies relish the opportunity to employ an MBA with a true multicultural skill set even if for only a limited time period. For more permanent positions, if a company wishes to sponsor a candidate for his or her H1-B work visa, KATZPORT will take care of all the necessary paperwork and the attorney fees. The Katz School prides itself on cuttingedge innovation and creative excellence. We are acutely aware that today’s marketplace knows few geographical boundaries. We work hard to ensure that our graduates are placed where their skills are most needed, regardless of geography or their citizenship. This is why we have developed KATZPORT, a comprehensive program that simplifies the visa process for its international students. In most cases, the only paperwork required by the hiring organization is an offer letter. The student and the University of Pittsburgh’s Office of International Services (OIS) do much of the paperwork for students with an F-1 visa, and the KATZPORT program will assist with all H1-B visa paperwork after the student graduates. Full-time employment: F-1 students may work up to twelve months on OPT after completing their studies without any sponsorship from the company. This may be an adequate time period to complete a particular project or train a graduate in a U.S. operation in preparation for a leadership position in the student’s home country where your company may operate. We have seen many smaller com- Internships: International students on an F-1 visa are eligible to complete internships in the U.S. under Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Employers do not need to complete any special paperwork to hire these interns. All that is needed is an offer letter for the internship stating employment dates, location (physical address), number of hours per week the intern will work, salary, and job responsibilities. International interns often bring a new perspective to a company and offer a high return on investment both in the work they perform and the multicultural perspective they offer a company’s other employees.
