Rowan History
Founded in 1923, Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State College) is a regional center for education, services and the arts. In 1992, the institution received the largest gift ever bestowed on a public college or university and was renamed in honor of benefactors Henry and Betty Rowan. The $100 million gift has become the catalyst for refining and expanding the role of the University in its service to students and the region. A medium-size university, Rowan enrolls about 1,500 students in 27 programs in The Graduate School and more than 9,000 students in 30 undergraduate majors among six academic colleges (Business, Communication, Education, Engineering, Fine & Performing Arts, Liberal Arts & Sciences). The University is located in the suburban southern New Jersey town of Glassboro, 30 minutes from Philadelphia and 55 minutes from the Jersey Shore. Our students also travel conveniently to New York, Washington, D.C., and the Chesapeake for research, training and recreation. Rowan’s campus is in the midst of an ambitious program of expansion and improvement. Most of the existing buildings have been or will be renovated. A new science building is scheduled to open soon. Additional buildings are in the planning stage.
