Conference By Jesse Muhammad & Michelle Stephenson 2008 Texas Leadership, Education and Diversity (L.E.A.D.) 6th Annual Conference and Career Fair Dr. Randall Pinkett of The Apprentice, Luncheon Keynote The National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) with the The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) hosted the Sixth Annual Texas Leadership and Diversity Conference (L.E.A.D.) and Career Fair on Thursday, July 17th and Friday, July 18th, at McNair Hall, Rice University. The luncheon featured keynote speaker Dr. Randal Pinkett, entrepreneur, author, speaker and winner of the fourth season of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. Dr. Pinkett is also the Chairman and CEO of BCT Partners. Paul D. Charles is the president of the National Black MBA Association Houston Chapter (NBMBAA) and Alex Suescun leads the local chapter for the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NHSMBA). Over six years ago, the two groups joined forces to host this event. The Texas L.E.A.D. Conference and Career Fair provides a forum for primarily Hispanic and Black professionals and students to develop their careers, network with other professionals and learn about corporate hot topics. The conference also provides an opportunity to hone leadership skills, learn corporate best practices, network with business leaders and entrepreneurs, and learn about diversity and education as it relates to success in a professional environment. “This conference always presents powerful opportunities for people to establish a network, learn career development skills and obtain great job offers,” says Suescun, who is an underwriter at JP Morgan Chase Bank. “I believe the challenges in the Hispanic and Black communities are the same in terms of education and a lack of presence in corporate America. So we want to stand in unity.” Luncheon Keynote Dr. Randal Pinkett & Paul D. Charles, Chapter President Paul D. Charles has been the president of the NBMBAA Houston Chapter for four years and added that “the unity between NBBMAA and NSHMBA over the last six years has created a better understanding among people. Education is impacting all communities.” The conference kicked off with a free Salsa and Soul Networking Mixer on Thursday, July 17th from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Baker Institute, featuring saxophonist Edmond Baker. The general conference included breakout sessions on Friday, July 18, facilitated by seasoned executives to address a range of topics from leadership, entrepreneurship, women in business and diversity board participation, and more. The topic of the current state and future of the oil and gas industry was also discussed. The two groups also focus on youth empowerment. Since 1991, NBMBAA has conducted the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program which provides eight months of mentoring to high school “minority” students. The Houston chapter is eager to provide annual scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to qualifying graduate and undergraduate students. NSHMBA has the Education for Success program as part of its outreach to budding, young business leaders. Speaker Tony Wylie, VP of Communications for Houston Texans & Michelle Stephenson, PR Co-Chair “We have to let young people know that it’s not always about trying to start a business from the ground up. With today’s economy, it’s about knowing how to take advantage of resources whether you work for yourself or someone else,” stated Charles. Suescun added, “you can leverage your connections even if you work for a company.” Speaker Tandelyn Atkinson Weaver & Dr. Wendy Johnson, Programming Co-Chair The conference culminated with a career fair with representatives from CITGO, Dell, Deloitte, Marathon Oil Corporation, Prudential, Spectra Energy, Mercer, Reliant Energy, Continental Airlines, JP Morgan Chase, MD Anderson, Reliant Energy, and HP. This annual career fair targets minority professionals in business or engineering with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, MBA or equivalent preferred. This event was free to attend and provided on-site interviewing for jobseekers. Corporate sponsors include: CITGO, Dell, Deloitte, Marathon Oil Corporation, Prudential, Spectra Energy, Mercer, JPMorgan Chase, HP, Hobsons and Rice University. Speaker Arthur J.
