					IRIS - Iris recognition immigration system
IRIS (Iris Recognition Immigration System) is a fast and secure way to clear immigration. Iris recognition offers a
method of securely recognising someone by the pattern of his or her iris. The iris is the most personally distinct
external physical characteristic. The IRIS takes a photograph of the iris pattern and converts it to a digital code
which is then compared against iris codes stored in a secure database.

Succesfully enrolled passengers can enter the United Kingdom through automated immigration control barriers after
looking into an iris recognition camera. These barriers are located at immigration arrival halls and form part of
Immigration and Passport Control.

The enrolment process takes approximately five to ten minutes. Crossing the IRIS barrier to enter the UK takes
approximately 20 seconds.

Why is the Border and Immigration Agency using iris recognition?

The UK is at the forefront of plans to use the latest technology in immigration controls. We have selected iris
recognition because it is a fast, secure and fraud resistant way to verify passengers' identities. This makes it an
ideal biometric for secure yet expedited clearance.

Applying to join IRIS
You can apply to use IRIS if you are:
A permanent resident in the UK

    • Permitted to enter or remain in UK for more than six months and you have more than two months left of
        your leave to enter or remain;

        clearance has more than two months left;

You will need to meet certain criteria to be eligible to apply to enrol on IRIS
If you do qualify, your travel document details will be entered onto a secure database, you will then have a picture
taken of your IRIS patterns and a portrait picture taken of your face.

The Iris pattern photographs are taken using standard video camera technology so there are:

    •   No bright lights
    •   No lasers
    • Your photographs will then be stored on the database along with your personal data.
