POLICY: Trust Dress Code Policy

Describe the aims, objectives and purpose of the policy service being assessed:

The Policy sets out the expectations of Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust of all its employees in relation to the requirements of its dress
code and the wearing of Trust uniforms.
The aims are to :-
Ensure all staff present a smart and professional image, thereby increasing public confidence,
Support the control and prevention of infection
To ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in the working environment in order to protect staff.

                                                                               staff , traditional floor length dress, jewellery or
                                                                               headwear associated with some cultures is not
                                                                               permissible in some areas of the Trust for reasons of

Disability                                                                     It is recognised that some staff may need modifications

                                                                               accommodated within the constraints of Health and
                                                                               Safety where possible. It is also recognised that some
                                                                               staff may have specific medical conditions e.g. allergic
                                                                               reactions to materials which will need to be addressed
                                                                               on an individual basis..
Religion or belief                           Negative                          Although wearing of religious symbols is permitted the
                                                                               requirement for these to be covered up in clinical areas
                                                                               is for reasons of health and safety and control of
                                                                               infection.
                                                                               Floor length clothing is not permissible where this
                                                                               constitutes a health and safety risk or a control of
                                                                               infection risk.
                                                                               Headscarves are permissible for most staff (except in
                                                                               theatres)unless they pose a health and safety risk/cross
                                                                               contamination risk.
                                                                               Full facial veils are not permissible in order to facilitate
                                                                               patient communication and improve the quality of
                                                                               patient care.
