Limits on Borrowing
It is preferred that only members of the Minnesota Bar materials. For non-Hamline alums, borrowing is allowed
through a firm librarian qualified the firm is large enough to have a librarian. There will still be the Patron
Registration Form, but the librarian will be contacted to formalize borrowing. Only circulating treatises are
loaned; No loans to attorneys outside Minnesota

A complete record will be created for attorneys when they first come to check out material by a full-time staff

County, Wisconsin or Minnesota directories, or by going to the firm's website

Limits on Borrowing
An attorney has to be a member of the Minnesota Bar to borrow without a deposit. For attorneys in greater
Minnesota, three-week-loan items are sent via UPS and bill for the cost. The borrower is responsible for
mailing back the item.

Fill out a form at the library, which will include the attorney registration number that will be checked in the
Minnesota Attorney Registration System; Contact the circulation desk for more information: 651-297-2775

Is there a fee for borrowing library items?
No, if a member of a bar association; For attorneys in greater Minnesota, the library will send three-week loan
items via UPS and bill for the cost. The borrower is responsible for mailing back the item.

Other Information/Services
Photocopy Service: The staff of the Library will photocopy and mail materials. The cost is 25 cents per page
($3.00 minimum), plus first-class postage, up to 50 pages per day.
Scanning Service: The staff will scan and email materials for patrons. The cost is 25 cents per page ($3.00
minimum), with a 20 page maximum per day.
Fax Service: The staff will fax materials for patrons. The cost is $2 per page ($3.00 minimum), with a 20 page
maximum per day.
To request photocopying, scanning, or faxing service, contact by email or by phone at (651) 296-2775. Exact
citations are required. Turnaround is usually within 24 hours when the library is open. Please note: Because of
their size, the Law Library does not include briefs in its photocopy service. Also, materials may be protected by
copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code).
Substantial reference help is offered, along with free Lexis and Westlaw access and other online subscription
services. The library also has wireless access. See the website for more information.

Carver County library

Attorneys can use interlibrary loan. If an attorney is looking for a specific case or an article, the library
manager will usually copy, fax it or scan it for no charge unless it is burdensome and then would charge a
standard fee that the public library charges for faxing which is $1.00 per page for local calls and $2.00 per page
for long distance calls. The county attorney's office has after hours access but no other attorneys do. The library
has an expansive subscription to Westlaw, including all 50 states and federal materials and a Lexis MN
subscription with full jurisdiction Shepards and online Thomson Gale Legal Forms.

The collection at the Galaxie library in Apple Valley is non-circulating. All Hastings location books circulate
unless marked as library use only.

Honor system: Library staff will ask if patron is an attorney and request a name and phone number on the
checkout record; Attorneys can contact the library manager for more information

Other Information/Services
Library staff can set up copier codes for attorneys who use the photocopier so that attorneys don't have to come
with currency when they need to make photocopies. No general internet access is available; computers are for
legal research only. The library has a patron courtesy phone; no cell phones are allowed. There are plans to add
wireless network access to the law library.

Limits on Borrowing
Minnesota residents may check out up to 2 books by leaving a refundable $40 deposit per item. Subscribers
have no limit on the number of items they may check out. Employees and officials of the U.S., Minnesota, and
Hennepin County governments may become subscribers at no charge. Other qualifying attorneys may become

Is there a fee for borrowing library items?
Resident Attorneys: Attorneys licensed to practice law in Minnesota with their offices in Hennepin County.
$55 x total Hennepin County-based attorneys in the firm. Non-resident Attorneys: Attorneys licensed to
practice law in Minnesota who have offices outside of Hennepin County but within a 25-mile radius of the Law
Library. $65 x total attorneys in the firm. Government Offices: Officials of the United States, State of
Minnesota, Hennepin County, and subordinates of these officials have no annual fee.
