State of New York Department of Transportation Albany, New York This 10-attorney unit acts as in-house counsel for the New York State Department of Transportation, which has over 10,000 employees. The unit provides advice on all legal issues, ranging from right-ofways, environmental law, technology and wireless communications including leases of cell towers, labor issues, contracts, and small claims matters. The lawyers act as liaisons with the state attorney general for litigation matters in state and federal court. Proposed student assignments include evaluation of regulations, assistance with department responses to complaints, preparation of contracts and agreements. Center for Law and Social Justice Brooklyn, New York The Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) is a community based education, research, and legal organization. The court is comparable to a probate court. Students are assigned research, writing opinions, and assisting the judge as hearing examiners at trial. In addition, the judge will assign a special project to the student, probably preparing informational brochures for pro per litigants. Students will closely work with the judge and his clerks in researching case law and writing briefs observing and participating in probate trials and interacting with attorneys judges and clients within the probate process. Granger Law Firm Buffalo, New York This is a general practice law firm in Buffalo. Students will conduct client interviews, research and draft pleadings and motions, and shadow the attorney in court. Volunteer Lawyer's Project Buffalo, New York This nonprofit corporation was established by a local bar association to provide pro-bono civil legal assistance. Approximately 850 attorneys volunteer through the program. Externs will handle interviewing, legal research, document preparation, representation in administrative hearings and negotiations, and sit second chair in landlord tenant trials. Ontario County District Attorney's Office Canandiagua, New York The DA's office prosecutes felonies, misdemeanors, violations and traffic infractions as well as forfeiture proceedings, extraditing criminals from outside the state, and working with victims of crime. Ontario County prosecuted between two and three thousand criminal cases each year. During Mr. Tantillo's tenure, Ontario County has had the highest felony conviction rate, and the highest DWI conviction rate, in the State of New York. The student will shadow in court and practice as provided by the New York Student Practice Rules. The student will be involved in all areas of a district attorneys office from interviewing witnesses, negotiating pleas, to trials. The founding attorney is a former ADA in the Bronx and has 11 years experience with this firm; the supervisor has worked with him as an attorney for seven years. Quartararo & Quartararo, PLLC Fishkill, New York This is a four attorney general practice firm that focuses on real estate, corporate and estate planning law. Mr. Quartararo handles primarily the real estate division of the firm. Externs will begin in the real estate division assisting with mortgage documents, title work, drafting legal documents and researching real estate issues. Externs will also assist other attorneys in the corporate and estate planning divisions as need arises. The Office has more than 170 lawyers and has attained one of the highest felony conviction rates in the country of 98.3%. The office has an established externship program and has an average of 30 externs at a time. Ms. Eileen Jones is the coordinator of this program. Externs are designated a department and are supervised by an experienced attorney. This is a very busy office and externs will participate in a number of legal activities. Students are aware that parking is not available, but most members commute via the subway. Legal Aid Society of Westchester County White Plains, New York This office regularly uses externs in both its civil and criminal divisions, in cases that include family law, adoptions, name changes, and felony matters. Students are assigned interviewing and counseling, research and drafting, discovery, and shadowing in court. They are not permitted to appear in court under the agency's own guidelines.
