Most, if not all of our pupils, are well aware that Emanuel was
founded by Lady Dacre as a coeducational institution in 1594
(and this was a rare event in those days). At the time Lady
Dacre made provision in her will for the education of 10 girls
and 10 boys and the school was initially located in
Westminster. Emanuel remained fully coeducational until 1883.
However, at that point, the Governors arranged for the girls to
go to the Greycoat Hospital School while the boys moved
to this site. For the next 112 years Emanuel was a single sex
boys school - and this explains, if nothing else, why our list of
famous female OEs is still rather short! In fact we started taking
girls for the second time just 12 years ago (in 1995). Since then
change has been rapid, and now girls make up over a third of

I hope that the boys at Emanuel will not feel left out by this
news! With this in mind, I would like to explain why we are
carrying out this survey and why Ratcliffe Hall employees will be
talking mainly to girls and their parents (although they will be
talking to some boys and their parents too - because your views
are relevant too.)
This background information should help to explain why
the Governors feel the time is right to look at the provision for
girls in 2007, and to find out more about the experiences of girls
at the school over the last few years. Then, if some
adjustments appear to be necessary for the future, we can make
these decisions on the basis of fact rather than on the basis of
hearsay. The year 10 Thorpe park trip was an illustrious
success, held over the summer holidays, members

A very promising U14A team made a splendid start to the new season with
a thumping away win at Caterham. Nine Emanuel tries were recorded (five
from the backs, four from the forwards) along with six conversions from
the boot of fly-half Dominic Tripp, a new arrival at the school. Two more
debutants also impressed greatly - Ryan Bourgi at prop and Harry Purnell
at full back. A brace of tries were bagged by Jack Delaney, Emanuel’s
most influential player, until forced off with injury in the second half. SPA On 12th September, Jacqueline Birtwisle -
