DATA ANALYSIS REFERENCE GUIDE (LAST UPDATED 11/12/03)
This reference guide is intended to act both as an aid to data analysis (by allowing data users to
see at a glance what questions or subjects particular variables relate to within the questionnaire
and to locate the source of specific variables) and also as a tool for facilitating the process of
naming new variables for questionnaires, monitoring forms, etc.
Theme name, description + source
This spreadsheet lists every theme name used to date in variable naming and provides a general
description of the type of question or subject matter to which this theme relates. Each description
starts with a short label (e.g. agency, school, parent, friend) followed by more specific details
where necessary). An X is used to denote which sources of data collection contain data relating
to each theme.
Y theme nos & descriptions
This spreadsheet is restricted to those variables collected from the young person's questionnaire.
Every theme name used in questionnaire variable naming is listed at least once - most are listed
more than once, since each theme name might be used up to 99 times to denote related
questions within a theme. Again, an X is used to show which questionnaire sweeps included
each specific question.
W & H theme nos & descriptions
Similarly, this spreadsheet is restricted to those variables collected from the children's hearing
and social work records. Again, each theme name used in the CHS and SWD monitoring forms
is listed at least once, with most being listed more than once to denote related but different
subjects/questions within a theme, and X shows which sweeps of data collection covered each.
subject/question
E theme nos & descriptions
All variables collected from school records or relating to educational ability or attainment
start with the prefix E, and this spreadsheet shows the theme names and numbers used so far.
T theme nos & descriptions
Teacher information was collected at sweep two only, and the variables collected are listed here.
G theme nos & descriptions
Various GIS variables have been collected from a wide variety of sources, including police,
council, etc. All variables with the prefix G are used in the GIS, and the various theme names
and numbers are listed here.
S theme nos & descriptions
Any new variables created as a result of SPSS analysis are given the prefix S for secondary.
Most secondary variables will have the same theme name as primary variables, but in some
instances new theme names have been devised (e.g. SRD). All theme names and numbers
used for secondary variables which are included in the MAIN data set are listed here.
