					                     WECC System Operator Training Course
                       Introduction to System Operations

Emphasis of this class is on the basics of Regulatory Entities, construction of the power
system, operation of generators and the operation of the power system. Introduction to
System Operations is a week-long class (Monday 13:00 – Friday 12:00) that offers
each student 30 NERC Continuing Education (CE) Hours, including six (6) NERC CE
hours of NERC Standards and six (6) NERC CE hours of simulation.

This course is designed for entry-level personnel new to System Operations and uses
the WECC System Operations Training Manual (SOTM) as its text.

    Introduction to:
          o     The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
          o     The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)
          o     The North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB)
          o     The Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC)
    Fundamentals of Electricity
          o     Mathematics Review
          o     Basics of DC Electricity
          o     Basics of AC Electricity
          o     Introduction to Active & Reactive Power
    Principles of Power Generation
    Substation Overview
    Transmission Overview
    Transformers
    System Protection
    Power system Overview
    Principles of Power System Operations
    Role of the System Operator

The following simulation modules, using the PALCO* system, are included in the
course. Additional Modules may be added as they are developed to enhance
understanding of the covered topics.

    Introduction to the PALCO System (how to use the simulator)
    Shunt Capacitors & Reactors
    Voltage & Var Characteristics of Transmission Lines
