									              The Cell Analogy Assignment
All of the living organisms on Earth are divided in small units called cells. Each
cell in and organism has a specific purpose and function. Inside cells there are
smaller things such as proteins and organelles. Cells are small compartments
that hold all of the biological equipment necessary to keep an organism alive.

A cell can be compared to other complex systems. When this is done it is called
an analogy.

a‧nal‧o‧gy [uh-nal-uh-jee] –noun, plural -gies.
1. a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based: the
analogy between the heart and a pump.

Analogies are often used to help explain scientific concepts. This assignment
requires you to think of something that is analogous to a cell and create a
diagram or blueprint to represent it.

One example of a cell analogy could be a FACTORY.

Organelle Function Corresponding factory part

Vacuole Stores food and water Storage tanks

Chromosomes Carries genetic material (DNA Blueprint for factory

Cell membrane Controls what comes in and Security for power plant
                                 out of the cell

Cell wall Supports and adds structure Outer walls
                                 to the cell

Endoplasmic Reticulum Canals for transporting Roads where trucks can drive
                                 materials throughout the cell

Nucleus Control center for the cell Central office
A requirement for this assignment is to create a table describing your diagram.
Fill in the following diagram to include the cell organelle, its function in a cell and
the part of the analogy that has an analogous function.

Organelle Function Corresponding part in your analogy and why
