                                 Support Service for Victoria’s Forgotten Australians

As you are probably aware, the new Support Service for Victoria’s Forgotten Australians will be
providing support services for Forgotten Australians and their families from mid-January 2010.
Some information about what the new service will offer is enclosed.
After consultation with people about the name of the new service, we have decided that Open
Place is a suitable name. Thanks to those who provided suggestions for alternatives or made
comments that helped us make the decision.

1.       CONTACT DETAILS FOR THE NEW SERVICE
The new service, Open Place, and its staff will commence at the new offices on 18 January 2010.

2.       NEW STAFF FOR OPEN PLACE
While there will be some new faces supporting people at the new service, we are delighted that
one very special familiar face will be joining the team at Open Place - Caroline Carroll, who after
some well-deserved holidays over Christmas, will be starting at the new offices in January.
3.       STAYING IN TOUCH WITH OPEN PLACE
We would really like to stay in touch with as many people as possible and so have started a
Contact List. If you would like to be on this list to receive the newsletter and information about

                   INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION
The new Support Service for Victoria’s Forgotten Australians, Open Place, will begin operation
from Monday January 18, 2010 and will be located in its own building at Suite 1, 8 Bromham Place,
Richmond.
Open Place will be supported by Berry Street and Relationships Australia (Victoria).

Services available
Brokerage counselling: Forgotten Australians who were in ‘care’ in Victoria can have counselling
arranged in their local area, and attend at no cost. Arrangements will continue for people who are
currently seeing a counsellor.

Counselling for family members: Immediate family members of Forgotten Australians (children,
partners, siblings) can have counselling arranged in their local area, and attend at no cost.

Social & Support Groups: The Social and Support Group which has been hosted by the Interim
Service will continue on the third Saturday of the month (January 16, February 20, March 20, etc).
More Social & Support Groups may be established at other times (including in rural areas) if
people are interested.

Life Skills Program: Financial assistance for Forgotten Australians to attend a course or class to
develop or improve skills. We may also be able to run some small courses through Open Place if
people have common interests.

Health: Financial assistance for Forgotten Australians to access dental, specialist medical, optical
and other health services will be available.

Access to Records: Assistance will be provided to help Forgotten Australians access records from
their time in care.

Support to find Family: Assistance will be provided to help Forgotten Australians trace family
members and support to meet them for the first time.

Personal Support & Referral and Support to access other services: Support will vary depending on
what Forgotten Australians need, including referrals to other services, help with reading materials
and filling in forms, advocacy, going to appointments and meetings.

Consultations: Staff from Open Place will be travelling across Victoria in February/March 2010 to
hold open meetings with anyone interested, to introduce themselves and to hear about local needs
and how the service may be able to help. More information will come soon through the
Newsletter and advertisements in local Newspapers.
