                               Navigating the System
This one day information session will present funding options available to
individuals with a disability, families and significant others and explore how
the system can work to support people with a disability.
What: Navigating the system will endeavour to present a coordinated outline of the different funding
processes and will give individuals an opportunity to share and grow their knowledge in this area. The
workshop will also explore strategies for managing individuals’ needs when funding is not adequate enough to
cover all areas, providing opportunities to explore local options and network with individuals from the
community. This will cover DSQ funded services, respite, support packages, how to apply for different kinds of
funding including Centrelink, consider legal issues: adult guardian role, public trustee’s role, planning around
your person, etc.

The Presenters: Dimity Jones has worked in the disability sector in both government and
community-based organisations over many years. She is a solicitor with additional qualifications in social work
and nursing. Dimity has worked with organizations, individuals and families to develop options for support to
cover times and areas when funding is not available. Dimity is also the parent of an adult man with a disability,
and, as such, is acutely aware of the difficulties families face trying to access funding for their family member.
Judith Mandall, a local to North Qld region, will be available to contextualize this training to the local
areas. Judith has worked in the disability sector for over 15 years as support worker, manager and training
officer. She is currently a general manager at Cootharinga in the Life Style Services. She has served on a
number of committees, “Creating Inclusive Communities” and has been a coalition member of the North Qld
DSTF. She is currently a member of the Regional Disability Council.

Who:         This training is aimed primarily at families & significant others of people with a disability. There will
be a limited number of places available for service providers.

How:          Participants will;
    •     Have an understanding of the funding that is available to individuals with a disability
    •     Be aware of the documentation required for funding applications; and
    •     Have an awareness of the process involved when applying for funding
    •     Have an overview of local resources and access to those resources

Cost:        $10 for DSTF Target Group*             $30 for Non Target Group            $10 for parents and unpaid carers
            (Cost includes: morning and afternoon tea and lunch)
