                  Presidents Report

This is the last newsletter before the AGM. Remember numbers for the dinner after the AGM are limited, so get in early to
book your place.

Listening to the rumours, the valley is alive with olive activity. Picking, pickling and processing. Although, as Mike Wilson
pointed out last newsletter, we have had a particularly dry year, with a variety of fruit condition and sizes.

Members should now be looking to review their grove performance for this year. Can the grove management and the quality
of fruit be improved, what issues were there when picking and arranging for processing? If you wait and make last minute
decisions, you may miss the opportunities for mechanical harvesting and processing options.

As you will have noted some members combining their efforts to manage their fruit crops, there are some new brand labels
and, in addition, a couple of local harvesters in the valley. This is an encouraging sign of positive growth in the local olive
industry.

Don’t forget to put the ‘Feast of the olive in your diaries.

I’m looking forward to seeing members at the AGM and dinner following.

AOA membership fees to increase
The ABS has released the March quarter statistics on CPI. the yearly increase is 3%.
Therefore, in accordance with a motion passed at the AOA Board meeting in February 2005, membership fees will
increase by the CPI, rounded to the nearest $5. Membership fees for 2006/07 will be:
‘Affiliated’ (members who are also members of an affiliated Regional Association or State Council) will pay $115 +
        GST ($126.50);

‘Direct’ members will pay $230 + GST ($253).

New communications strategy for AOA

Review of AOA communications strategy:
The AOA board conducted a review of its communications strategy at the April Board Meeting in Melbourne. The
relatively new E-Newsletter, with up-to-date news, the ‘what’s on’ segment, reviews of recent events and links to
photos, has been a success and it additionally provides greater flexibility in the way the board and secretariat
communicate with members and affiliated associations.

The Australian Olive Expo (AOE) also provides a new opportunity for communication. Papers read at this year’s
seminar series at the AOE will be peer-reviewed, and it was agreed that an issue of The Olive Press (TOP),
dedicated to the papers, would be the best way to distribute the research and development to the wider Australian
olive industry.

As a result, the board decided that it could now take a more cost-effective approach to its communications with the
monthly E-Newsletter, and two hard-copy editions of TOP each year; once in the Spring, as the research and
development issue based on the AOE, and an Autumn issue, covering in depth issues relevant to the Australian olive
industry. These changes will have a positive effect on the AOA’s strained budget. The board has been fortunate to
retain the services of Margaret Chidgey who will continue to edit the E-Newsletter and TOP.

There will be a further review of the entire communications strategy as part of the DAFF/Olive Industry Action
Partnerships Program over the next 12 months.
