Integrated Lessons That Work

Teachers: Alicia Wise, Ed Donahue, Tim Chocklett Vocational/Career Component: Technology Education (Basic Technical

Drawing)

Academic Component: Geometry SOL/Competencies:G.11 Technology SOLS:

C/T 9-12.1 Demonstrate Knowledge of the nature and operation of technology systems C/T 9-12.2 Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology C/T 9-12.3 Demonstrate knowledge of ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology C/T 9-12.4 Practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software C/T 9-12.5 Demonstrate knowledge of technologies that support collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity C/T 9-12.6 Use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources C/T 9-12.7 Evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness for specific tasks C/T 9-12.8 Use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions C/T 9-12.9 Use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences

Materials Needed: paper, straight edge, compass, pencil, computer with internet access Students will…use instruction from textbook, teacher demonstration, and the website www.mathopenref.com to learn the appropriate construction techniques. The student will construct using a compass and staight-edge - a line segment congruent to a given line segment, the bisector of a line segment, a perpendicular to a given line from a point not on the line, a perpendicular to a given line at a point on the line, the bisector of a given angle, and an angle congruent to a given angle. Using

these basic constructions the student will construct a 45 degree angle, an isosceles right triangle, a square, and a rectangle.

Reflection on lesson: Students enjoy this activity. The student has a concrete

application that allows them to start viewing 3-dimensional objects when illustrated on 2dimensional paper. If more time were available, students could explore more with computer simulations of geometry - particularly Geometer's Sketchpad. Students could also explore Cross-Sectional Geometry (which occurs when a plane intersects a threedimensional object).
